Monologue: Banking BadBill reacts to the top stories of the week, including bank failures, seaweed blobs and more in his Real Time monologue.
Noa Tishby on Israel's Internal Strife
Israel's Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism and Delegitimization, Noa Tishby, joins Bill to discuss the judiciary overhaul roiling Israel's democracy.
Bank Bailouts
Andrew Yang and Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) join Bill to discuss the banking scare that's currently sweeping the nation.
Forbes Fails
We dug through the Forbes Magazine archive and realized that prognosticating is not their strong suit.
New Rule: No National Divorce!
A growing number of Americans support the idea of a "national divorce," but you cant call yourself a patriot of the United States and not be for the whole united part.
Overtime: Andrew Yang, Noa Tishby, Rep. Elissa Slotkin
Bill Maher and his guests continue their conversation after the show.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Israeli actress/author/activist Noa Tishby (5:52), entire panel discussion with Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Andrew Yang (17:21), Bill's "funny bit" (30:53), and includes the opening part of New Rules (45:29). It won't last long, as usual:

(205,320 posts)I just wish that they'd offer Overtime the same night like they used to. I need to add it tomorrow.

(58,361 posts)question everything
(47,478 posts)Except that he wants Biden to be a one term president?
The Forbes cover pages was great, too.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)And he was good on current events.
Auggie
(31,169 posts)(Paraprashing the rest): Yang said that Biden said in 2020 he was there to be a bridge to next generation. "That's what he should be," said Yang.
Yang said Biden did his job: he got rid of Trump, he got great things done, and that it's time to hand it over to the next generation (Newsom, Slotkin, etc). "If he does not then we are punting on this entire succession challenge and it could emerge at a very inopportune time. There are very real risks ..."
Yang thinks there should be a competitive Democratic presidential primary in 2024.
Don't shoot the messenger (me).
Conversation starts at 44:00 in the bootleg version.
Good panel, good show. Thanks for posting, Rhiannon12866!!!

(205,320 posts)And when he weighed in on whether the vice president should also be elected separately, he said that they should be. I agreed with Noa Tishby and Elissa Slotkin that the president should be able to choose the vice president who s/he wants to work with. Actually, this might have been in answer to an Overtime question - which I will add as soon as it's available - which will be tomorrow.
Though I have to agree that overall, it was a good show. Thanks so much for weighing in!

(111,255 posts)but I have to agree with Maher, trying to pin Yang down on most subjects is like trying to nail Jello to the ceiling.

(205,320 posts)I often wonder why they choose the guests that they do, though it was clear for the two other guests, Noa Tishby was there to explain what's going on in Israel and Elissa Slotkin is currently serving and hopes to run for Senate. I also wasn't sure about Andrew Yang, though I don't think he was, either. He seemed much less sure of what he supports than he did when he ran for president.

(1,293 posts)He didn't add much at all... which I think took away from Slotkin becoming fully engaged in the conversation.
But I really, REALLY like Noa. She has her priorities straight, is willing to give credence to other points of view when the occasion merits, yet strongly defends that which she believes in. And she's quite charming to boot!
And I have to admit, on an intellectual/common sense basis, his New Rules were probably spot on. As easy as it is for me to totally despise many that I disagree with, with the number growing, this is more a recent phenomenon with me as I used to just sort of ignore them when possible. This national divorce meme, as he says, is dangerous and does not help. I just don't know how to tamp it down.
Many thanks for the thread!
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)He completely cut off John Heilemann who was the guest I looked forward to hearing from - and it was the same this week with Elissa Slotkin.
And I really liked Noa Tishby as well. I had no idea what to expect from her, but she was well spoken and, as you said, completely realistic and fair. And, as she said, she was speaking for herself, not as a representative of the Israeli government. I hope that she comes back in the future.
I also agreed with New Rules, was glad that Bill addressed this since, for me, these are scary times. I still don't understand how anyone in this country thought that an offensive grifting blowhard with no knowledge of government would make a competent president, but the floodgates are now opened and we now have the same ignorant anti-government disruptors now serving at the national level.
BTW, I don't know if you or anyone noticed, but I added the Overtime segment when it was available early today. I don't know why they decided to move that to CNN, maybe to increase HBO subscribers, but I wish that they'd make it available online right after the show like they used to.

(12,423 posts)He seems to harp on that but fails to mention how often conservative colleges host liberal speakers, which is probably never.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)College, traditionally, has been seen as a place not just for course learning, but as an opportunity for students to get out in the world for the first time and to be exposed to other viewpoints and to expand their horizons. I've often thought of that when Bill has said recently that a college education is not necessary for a job. A college experience is not restricted to the courses one takes, but to meet other people and learn about the larger world. However, that is not the aim of conservative colleges - which we have seen most recently in Florida where DeSantis has been attempting to shut down or restrict colleges in "his" state that offer that experience.

(53,956 posts)There is a reason Maher doesn't "harp" about the conservative colleges and universities for the exact reason you spelled out and why it is so galling that so-called "liberal" university students shut down speech for which they do not agree. You are also correct that universities and colleges are so much more than "classes". While I don't think everyone, or even most, should attend college, those who want to do so shouldn't be prohibited because of money. Of course, given the schisms on the right between conservatives and MAGAts, we could start seeing such protests. Imagine a group bringing in Adam Schlinger or some other "RINO". I am guessing we might see some over-the-top screeching like wounding seals.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)And by that, I don't mean the specific course work, but the experience of getting out in the world - granted a very limited first foray out in that world - but where students meet those who may be unlike themselves and are exposed to new experiences. Bill had that experience and that contributed to who he is today.
The college currently in the news is New College in Florida - which DeSantis is attempting to restrict or shut down. That news story caught my attention since I believe one of my boarding school classmates attended that school. My girls' boarding school, started in 1879, had so many unnecessary rules and traditions as to be confusing and many of us ended up in hot water. So when it came to attending college (which, back then, was one of the points of graduating from that school), so many of us went looking for a school that was just the opposite of that experience.
And I agree that money should not be a prohibiting factor. I was lucky, my Dad paid for my education, he started saving for it not long after I was born. My grandmother was a teacher and emphasized education and was very proud that all 4 of her children managed to get a college education - despite losing their own Dad at a very young age. But times - and tuition - sure have changed. I don't know how anyone can afford it these days without some sort of scholarship.

(1,293 posts)When thinking of the rather stark differences between those on the Left and those on the Right, to me this is a big one. I like to believe that WE are the ones who take in information, process it, and then not only articulate an opinion but are able as well to deconstruct the opposing view(s). THEY are the ones who tend to react with emotion, supporting their 'positions' putting forth the verbiage from the likes of MTG, Boebert, Pillow Guy, et al.
This type of response reminds me of a child who plugs their ears and yells out "I can't hear you!".
