Related: About this forumRoger Hedgecock says destruction of Hiroshima & Chernobyl not so bad after all, was just "hysteria"
During his talk show on Jan.29, 2013 on KFMB AM in San Diego, the right wing commentator Roger Hedgecock said that the grave reports of nuclear destruction of Hiroshima in World War 2, as well as the meltdown and explosion of the Cernobyl nuclear power plant in 1988, were exaggerated due to "hysteria" from "anti-nuke folks". He suggested the areas have been improved by the disasters.
Hedgecock said he visited Hiroshima and rather than being "nuclear wasteland, unfit for habitation for a thousand years...devoid of life for tens of thousands of year" as predicted by "anti-war, anti-nuke folks," instead "Hiroshima is one of the most modern cities because it had an instant redevelopment plan" which he laughingly mentions "destroyed the whole city". He said Hiroshima was previously "a rabbit warren of mideval streets" but "it now has broad avenues, magnificent highrises" with "four or five times the population it had in 1945."
Hedgecock went on to say that this improvement by nuclear destruction "has happened again" in Chernobyl, Ukraine, the site of a nuclear power plant meltdown and explosion in 1986. The Chernobyl area now has a "surge in wildlife" with no mutations like "giant wolves or three-headed deer," Hedgecock said. "The dirtiest radioactive site in Europe has become the continent's biggest animal sanctuary. So much for the hysteria."

(155 posts)we should have a general nuclear war and then the whole world will eventually be an even better place than it is now. Gawd, where does this right-wing trash come from? By the way, to illustrate just how American media has turned into crap there is this - I live in the Seattle area and there used to be a CBS station on 1090 AM which was liberal/progressive in its talk show orientation. Just recently CBS made the decision to change over to, wait for it, sports! Yup, now instead of getting some insightful counter arguments to the Limbaughs and Hannitys of the country we get yet another station with mindless sports blab. Its not like we need any more of these as a cursory tuning of the dial at night will reveal that sport talk shows are everywhere. Now we have one less station to refute the Rethug garbage that spews out of right-wing talk/hate radio. Thanks, CBS!

(321 posts)The reason for so little radiation left at Hiroshima/Nagasaki, is because of the height at which the bombs exploded (which was from about 1600-2000ft in the air). Exploding so high up, allowed alot of the fallout to disperse in the atmosphere, and greatly decreased the neutron activation on the ground too. If the bombs had exploded closer to the ground, the radiation would've been alot worse.

And as for Chernobyl, which suffered more contamination, all is not fine and dandy:
"Mutation isn't the only adverse effect of the radiation. Working in the Red Forest area, James Morris, a USC biologist, has observed some trees with very strange twisted shapes.
The radiation, he says, is confusing the hormone signal that the trees use to determine which direction to grow.
"These trees are having a terrible time knowing which way is up," Morris said."
