(15,682 posts)from miles away, it is still frightening as hell. It is just so easy to use the internet for everything. EVERYTHING!! Banking, bill-pay, socializing, politicizing, correspondence, health, well you name it.

(1,922 posts)I have a few friends who are working on a subscription-based anti-ID-theft system. They are working with some really interesting entities.
You are correct, the whole thing is scary as hell.
I live totally under the radar and what they know about me is unsettling.

(15,682 posts)One that I set up to see photos from my daughter in Utah. The other because I forgot about the first. I don't use either of them to speak of. But I'll be damned if I don't go to a random website and see myself signed in with my little icon (not a picture of myself, btw). I find myself connected to sites from email accounts from years ago. And they ALWAYS want me to voluntarily clink on their little "Why, Thank You, Sucker" button to connect them all together. NEVER!!
I have had (unintentionally, I believe) my identity stolen - a woman with the same name, off by only one letter. In 19 years I haven't been able to shake her off. Repossessing a car I never owned, questions from the IRS, on my credit report (she owes a lot of money - close to 100,000.00). She still remains. My credit reports even show two SS numbers. Mine and hers. I stopped trying. I live in cash - no credit.

Ghosts, Bigfoot, Space aliens, ghosts, are all basically rubbish, no real evidence. And so are these scammers who pretend to contact dead people. It is called Cold Reading and it's one the oldest scams in the book.

(14,549 posts)who claim to offer more secure banking than... (?) It is a sales pitch kind of like the old vacuum cleaner salesmen who would thorw dirt on your carpet when you open the door for them and then offer to clean it up.
These bogus viral ads are becoming more common because they are effective at fooling people into thinking they are something other than ads. The most radically successful one so far was the 'security cameras catch acts of kindness' one which is an ad for Coca-cola

We can thank "Matt" 'dancing-like-I-am-about-to-pee-myself' guy for popularizing this. He cut a series of them as ads for Cadbury's Stride gum. They are so effective that if you watch them on YouTube you get ad before you can see them -- in other words you get an ad in front of an ad.
