I admit that I let the cats in the apartment out at night to go roam through the courtyard. About a week ago I let them out, but my Siamese cat (photo below) didn't return that night. Josie is about 2.5 years old and he vanished once before for about a week so I didn't get worried because he showed the signs of heightened hormones recently. However, I was getting concerned because about a month ago I had to put down a six month old kitten because of a broken jaw caused by another animal.
Anyhow, Josie showed up at my door about 30 minutes ago. He lost his collar and he was hungry but seems okay. It's the best Thanksgiving present I could receive and I already emptied the package of Turkey Temptations for him. I'll worry about giving him a bath later in the day.

(112,226 posts)Josie is intelligent enough to know when a bath is coming so he will take evasive maneuvers like hiding underneath the kitchen sink , but once I start scrubbing him with the flea shampoo he acts like he just received a treatment at a spa. After he is through with the bath he tends to take a nap for three or four hours afterward.

(112,226 posts)Anything related to financial matters falls to my brother. I'm living on so little that I can't afford to have him neutered.

(31,392 posts)There are free or low cost spay/neuter clinics almost everywhere. Google for your area.
We had two kitties that we put out at night in good weather. I think that's the only reason they survived our house fire. But they were also both neutered. One of them, Mouse, would occasionally be gone for several days. But he always came home.

(10,005 posts)It's bad enough to let cats run loose with all the dangers that presents to them. If you can't afford to get this one neutered, what are you going to do if he comes home with a broken leg? A big abscess on his head from a fight? And so on. Outdoor cats run up huge vet bills that indoor cats don't. Indoor cats run up enough on their own.
You're lucky he came home this time. Might not always be this lucky.
Keep him inside. No excuses.

(23,688 posts)Not to be a scold, but he may not come back the next time. Get him chipped, or don't let him out. House cats have no business roaming around. In rural areas maybe it's different, but not urban or suburban.
