The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI changed my mind: now I want Shakey's pizza.
Not just the pizza; the experience. The barnlike structure of the building. The long, low dark hardwood tables. The window into the kitchen where you could see them tossing the pizza dough. The one I grew up near in San Antonio would often hire a clown to entertain the kids. This was back before 'creepy clowns' became a thing.
Nothing like it...

(23,738 posts)Thin crust pizza that you could watch being made, Mojo Potatoes, Fried Chicken and Pitchers of Beer -- and Bunch'o'Lunch all-you-can scarf down specials!
Our local one had a table magician roaming around. Not bad, either. Worked in the area for years.

(3,064 posts)My friends would frequent it on occasion. Mainly
late 60s/early 70s. Right part of town, great food if a serious onslaught of the munchies came on.

(7,522 posts)Was never sure, but you knew you were in Shakey's. It was the first pizza place I went to with my friends when we were old enough to drive.

(66,365 posts)I remember those! I became such a huge Charlie Chaplin fan, too.
Once, they were playing an old Flash Gordon cliffhanger serial. I remember they had dumped Flash and Dale into a huge water tank, and set the "shark men" on them.

(4,858 posts)...when we travelled from Washington DC to my parents' hometown in CT, we always stopped at the Farm Shop. It was never as big as Friendly's, but I always thought it was a lot better...really miss them...

(16,379 posts)We had them when I was growing up in Memphis. We used to go as a family to Shakey's then go play miniature golf. Nice memories. Now there's just Chuckie Cheeses, yuck.

(7,809 posts)When I was in high school. I can't remember the name of it, but a large group of people could order the "Pig Trough." When it was delivered, it took 2 waiters to carry it while running around the whole restaurant.
You could get a glass of soda water for 2¢.
The one at Tacoma Mall closed sometime in the late '80's, I think.
Long gone. But not forgotten...
Farrell's. We loved that place.

(66,365 posts)It's mostly just nostalgia. The times my grandparents took us to Shakey's were wonderful experiences.

(3,085 posts)to sate our raging munchies after partaking in the Herb. One day one of us piled a plate with broccoli spears and smothered it in cheese sauce. We sat down at our table and one of us took a bite of his broccoli and cheese sauce and stated: " This isn't cheese sauce, this is butterscotch pudding!" We almost died of the giggles.
