I would send an acknowledgement when I received it & a thank you when I opened it.
If it is something like Amazon, no.
But for a recent Etsy order that took a long time (international), I had contacted the seller at first saying it did not arrive (after 3 weeks) asking for tracking info (cost prohibitive in the UK) they told me they didn't have any. I sent them an update saying that the package arrived.
But in most cases, tracking should handle everything. Even USPS First Class has it.
AS an Etsy seller, not one buyer has let me know when the order was received.
for Christmas. It just irks me when I take the time to send something and the recipient can't take the time to say, " Thanks, I got the gift you sent me."
but...from my experience, actually writing a thank you note takes a bit longer.
I think it's nice to let someone know I got the package. Then I still write a thank you. But apparently the last part is from olden times according to people today.
Just curious--- I've never once had an Etsy buyer notify me that their package was received. (tracking lets me know)
I have made only a handful of purchases off etsy (necklace and stuff like that) but I did email the sellers because I was so thrilled with the items. One was a painting that blew me away in person. It was very large and I'm sure it was tracked but it was so pretty i had to express my delight.
I thought the OP was referring to when you send a gift to someone. I had a friend send me something directly from Macy's so I texted her to let her know I got it and then I followed up with a written email.
When I purchase online, they usually know when it was received because it's tracked. Like Amazon. On ebay, I leave feedback right away so they know as well.
Now, I ordered off a wedding registry for my niece when she got married and I didn't hear a thing for almost a year. It was an expensive purchase and I worried about it. I think I got a notification that it had shipped but not sure there was tracking info. FINALLY got a hand written thank you but a quick email or text would have been nice.
She also since placed another order. To this day, she's the only customer who left a review (well 5 as she ordered 5 pussyhats).

The only person I've (so far) had things shipped to directly was my sister (from AMazon for my nieces' birthdays). She usually sends me a picture of the girls playing with the item.
Most people do this.
In a few recent and separate circumstances, some gifts were sent to some young relatives.
No thank you, no acknowledgement, no nothing. Asked about it a month later. Response was, "oh yeah, thanks".
Felt like slapping them upside the head.
