It is a balmy 9 degrees, and tonight might be even warmer - 10 degrees. Sub-zeros return tomorrow night. I'll be so glad when this particular cold spell passes.

We sometimes get a cold snap when temps drop down in the low teens, and inevitably the power goes out. I'm so grateful that we have a wood stove that keeps the main rooms toasty warm when that happens. You don't say where you live, but even with the best insulation, how do you keep out the cold when temps are so low? Do you shut off rooms to conserve heating fuel, or add space heaters to warm living areas? What if the power goes out?

and lots of insulation.

and my passive solar sun porch heats the whole house on sunny days - even if its below zero out.

Going to renovate the fireplace room (and put in a wood stove insert) and get some mini-split heat pumps in the coming years.

For power outages, I have kerosene lamps and heaters.

But right now I'm pretty snug.

We get that here sometimes (Minneapolis). It's been cold lately, but not that cold. It's supposed to get down to -13°F tonight.

how much work you had to do outside in that temperature. Here, I shoveled the porch and ramp and brushed the car off yesterday at 0 deg.; and this morning did the same at 4 deg. And this morning felt so much warmer because there was no wind! When you brush the top of your car off and it blows back into your face at 0 deg., you start to develop a bad attitude.

If you didn't have to go out and do anything, feel free to join me as I huddle over this hot air vent. I'm working on a potion what will enable me to hibernate until approx. April. I haven't decided what year yet.
