My country music paradox:

On the whole, country music is the one genre of music that I just never took a liking to.

I don't know why, but it just never held my interest. It's usually too twangy and whiny for my taste.

I'll listen to rock music on the radio, pop music, rap/R&B, classical, folk, you name it. But if there's a country station on, I'll flip right on by.

However, with all that being said.....

I also consider every one of The Highwaymen (Cash, Nelson, Jennings and Kristofferson) masters at their work who have produced exceptional music over the decades.

Maybe it's because I consider them more earthy and folkish than what usually gets put forth as "country music"? I dunno. (FWIW, I also like bluegrass music, which could also be considered a form of country.)

On the one hand, it's rife with bad grammar and dialectical stuff that sets an English major's teeth on edge. On the other hand, you can understand the lyrics and hum the tune, practically a miracle for music in the last forty years.
And you're right, those guys were the real deal.

as I do Disco. Never wanted to just listen to it but it sure is fun dance music. Hard to beat a good Texas Two-Step or a nice slow Waltz.

Most of that time was in Top 40 (a format that no longer exists) and Adult Contemporary. I loathed country music. Then one week, I was asked to do a vacation fill-in on the mid day shift of our country formatted sister station. I took it, because it beat working the 6-midnight shift on the Top 40 FM, and hey, it was only a week. I found that I actually liked much of it (I still hated George Jones and Hank Williams) and found that it didn't wear on me as fast as the stuff I was playing on the Top 40 station.

The last three years I spent in radio was from 1981-84 at a modern country station. I found I really liked almost everything we played. Today I listen to an oldies station in the morning, and a county station on my way home.

Oh, and I love the Highwaymen. Silver Stallion is one of my favorite songs.
