Turn off your computer, or at least, make sure it doesn't control the gravity, air supply or doors....

and letting the special effects parts play on in the background. I "saw" it in '68 and just wrote it off as inscrutable and thought that my musical taste was so beyond things that for me the Blue Danube was a frivolous cliche - HAH! Can you *imagine*?!1

And I thought it trivialized Zarathustra's motif. And I never gave it another viewing, until now. FRIEDKIN's brief comment to Alec that "This (venue) is called 'The Essentials' and this movie is the (one & only) most essential of all," made Alec say, with a dubious edge, "Really!"

All these years later, knowing more about KUBRICK, I was way more appreciative. It looked a little dated in the prehistoric panoramas and the scenes of stylized "modern" furniture and stilted dialog, which now was reminiscent of Strangelove, but the interactions with HAL were Shining-scary.

Given the landmark status it was given in the introduction (better than Citizen Kane, Casablanca?!1), it's a fly in the soup that it didn't get an Oscar (if they count anymore) for directing instead of just special effects.

ON EDIT: (looking up who/what got best Director/Picture) ... (I'm baaaaack: ) Ugh, Oliver! got Best Pic and Carol REED (for Oliver!) Best Director. It seems like a klinker of an awards year (Cliff ROBERTSON best actor for Charly and a TIE Hepburn/STREISAND - they should have had the guts to give it to Barbra ALONE!)
