Have no idea. As kids we thought it hilarious, probably because of 'sauercraut' bobbieinok Jan 2018 #3

in a cellar, waiting for the storms to pass.
We didn't eat kraut but it was common to open up a jar of home canned fruit stored there and pass the jar around.

"Where was Moses when the lights went out?"

"In the dark."

Edited to add: at this site http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/6810/ American jukebox there is listed a recording from 1901 of "where was moses when the lights went out" but I don't know how to make it play the song, so I don't know if the patriarch was in the dark or down in the cellar eating sauerkraut.
