(38,421 posts)Once in the Chicago area, and other time on the road. I heard someone announce on the radio that he was giving a concert somewhere in western Iowa at high school gym if I recall. I paid my 10 bucks, and went in. (in 1973 that was a lot)...anyway that was a few months before he died in that plane crash.
and Operator is indeed a very sad song..."You can keep the dime" " I didn't want to talk to her.."

Lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II
One dream in my heart,
One love to be living for,
One love to be living for,
This nearly was mine.
One girl for my dream,
One partner in paradise,
This promise of paradise
This nearly was mine.
Close to my heart she came
Only to fly away,
Only to fly as day flies from moonlight
Now, now I'm alone,
Still dreaming of paradise,
Still saying that paradise
Once nearly was mine.
I'll keep remembering kisses
From lips I've never owned,
And all the lovely adventures
That we have never known.
One dream in my heart,
One love to be living for,
One love to be living for,
This nearly was mine.
Close to my heart she came
Only to fly away,
Only to fly as day flies from moonlight.
Now, now I'm alone,
Still dreaming of paradise,
Still saying that pardise
Once nearly was mine.
Love Sinatra's version too.
Another tearjerker from Frank along the same lines - "Hello Young Lovers" from The King And I.

(1,474 posts)Haunting in the orginal with the French horns. John once called it his favorite ever Beatles tune, and it is, of course, a Paul composition.
Here's a fun studio version:

(52,209 posts)I like the song itself and French horn, though not overwhelmed by the simple, classical riff.
Much as I love the Beatles, I think I prefer emmylou harris version.
Among other changes, she ends the song with the you wont forget her line, which I think works better than pauls adding one more chorus.

(33,643 posts)And with this I drop the mike because the misery of lost love has never been done better than this song. Ever.
The lyrics are brilliant but it's the performance that's just ... I mean ... emotion doesn't get more palpable.
if you've never heard this song put on your headphones turn it up and think back to a time you were heartbroke ... If the 'it's never over' part doesn't move you ... you just might be soulless.
looking out the door I see the rain
fall upon the funeral mourners
parading in the wake of sad relations
as their shoes fill up with water
and maybe i'm too young
to keep good love from going wrong
but tonight you're on my mind
so ... you never know
broken down and hungry for your love
but no way to feed it
where are you tonight, child
you know how much i need it
too young to hold on
and too old to just break free and run
sometimes a man gets carried away
when he feels like he should be having his fun
much too blind to see the damage he's done
well sometimes a man must awake
to find that really ...he has no-one
so I wait for you
and I burn
will i ever see your sweet return
oh will I ever learn
oh lover, you should've come over
'cause it's not too late
lonely is the room, the bed is made,
the open window lets the rain in
but lying in the corner
is the only one who dreams he had you with him
my body turns and yearns for a sleep that won't ever come
it's never over
my kingdom for her kiss upon my shoulder
it's never over
all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
it's never over
all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
it's never over
she's the tear that hangs inside my song forever
well maybe I'm just too young
to keep good love from going wrong
oh lover, you should've come over
'cause it's not too late
well I feel too young to hold on
and I'm much too old to break free and run
too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage I've done
sweet lover, you should've come over
oh, love well I'm waiting for you
lover, you should've come over
cause it's not too late
(RIP JB)

Another one that's absolutely SLAIN me at various times ... and yeah, the fact that it can be interpreted in an 'allegorical' fashion ... is not lost on me ... in fact it's a big part of why I love this one
i have spent nights
with matches and knives
leaning over ledges
only two flights up
cutting my heart
burning my soul
nothing left to hold
nothing left
... but blood and fire
you have spent nights
thinking of me
missing my arms
but you needed to leave
leaving my cuts
leaving my burns
... hoping I'd learn
and blood and fire
are too much for these restless arms to hold
and my nights of desire are calling me
back to your fold
and I am calling you
calling you
from 10, 000 miles away
won't you wet my fire with your love, babe?
i am looking for someone
who can take as much as i give,
give back as much as i need ya know
and they
... they still have the will to live
i am intense, I am in need, i am in pain, i am in love
i am intense, I am in need, i am in pain, i am in love
i am intense, I am in need, i am in pain, i am in love
and i feel forsaken ... ya know like the things i
... i gave away
and blood and fire
are too much for these restless arms to hold
and my nights of desire are calling me
back to your fold
and I am calling you
calling you
from 10,000 miles away
won't you wet my fire with your love, babe?

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,686 posts)Popular music has nothing on the old masters by way of music for the lovelorn.
Schubert's song cycle "Die Winterreise" is totally emo - for example: "I look in vain for her footprints beneath the snow where she once walked with me through the green meadow; I want to melt away the snow and ice with my tears. I have nothing to remember her by except my pain. She is frozen in my heart; if it thaws, her image will flow away."
And the Italian madrigals of the late 16th-early 17th centuries are marvelously woeful. There's a great film, "The Full Monteverdi," that is a dramatization of Claudio Monteverdi's most dolorous, angst-ridden madrigals about romantic rejection. It's been a thing for a very long time.

I want to hold the hand inside you
I want to take a breath that's true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
You live your life, you go in shadows
You'll come apart and you'll go blind
Some kind of night into your darkness
Colors your eyes with what's not there

(33,643 posts)She hung out with Hope pretty often back in early 90's and one time she brought Sylvia Gomez over to my place and we strummed and sang some stuff from their debut She Hangs Brightly (the one before this one) ... think it's the only one she was in the lineup for but she played and wrote some of those songs ... Give You My Lovin' in particular I remember us playin' and she wrote the rhythm guitar sequence she told me. Not that it's complicated, but ...
As a whole work, their debut is actually my favorite of theirs.
