Mort Walker, "Beetle Bailey" creator, dies at 94

Walker created the "Beetle Bailey" strip in 1950, featuring the military goof-off who spends his Army time trying to outwit (or outrun) his hot-tempered drill sergeant, Sgt. Snorkel. Walker also created the strips "Hi And Lois", "Boner's Ark", and "Sam's Strip". He also founded a museum devoted to the art of cartooning.

RIP to a great American creative genius.

...is that it wasn't originally a military strip. In its first year(s?) it was set at a college, with Beetle and Plato students and frat brothers. After a time, Walker decided, based on his own experiences in the Army, that it was a more fertile ground for his type of humor, and re-launched the strip with the two of them recast as new recruits.

so can't say I know anything about it. That's an interesting factoid, though--thanks for posting it!
