(16,104 posts)the bi-polar nature of Lennon/McCartney.
And the awesome originality, and the sublime, perfect end of their greatest album.

(33,643 posts)I do think Abbey Road is their Greatest Album, though, honestly.
After that though for me it's a 3 way tie ... Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, and White Album.
All of these 4 I believe represent the pinnacle of rock & roll music. Any band would be proud to have 1 album as great as any of them.
Then they also made 5 other bona-fide great albums in Help, Hard Days Night, Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery Tour, and Let It Be ... and they created all 9 in just 6 years.
Freaking incredible what they accomplished overall, esp. considering how quickly it all happened.

(28,394 posts)So many great ones, though!
Have you ever seen Bette Midler perform it in "For The Boys?" She's singing on a USO tour in Vietnam, and it's absolutely heartbreaking. I should mention that right before she starts singing, a guy in the audience yells "show us your tits!" and she replies, "you couldn't handle it!"

(52,331 posts)i keep coming back to "if i fell", that's probably been my favorite most of the time.
complex song, yet it seems so simple. brilliant harmony. i love singing along to john's part, going from harmony under paul, jumping up to solo and back down to harmony.
but others are awesome, too...

jeez, just about the whole catalog.
only a few songs i rather don't care for...
taxman -- i can definitely appreciate it musically, but i have a pet peeve about rich people whining about taxes

(2,302 posts)I used to sing it with my sister, and it took me forever to figure out John's part.

(52,331 posts)they're often not the generic third-above harmonies, but they're also not completely independent counter melodies.
or at least, they're lame melodies that don't work alone, but together they're magic.
john's harmony part i remember learning, a music major friend of mine showed it to me on a piano. he really liked the way john's harmony walks up ("give my heart" and then "falls" back down ("to you" , he found it to be a musical joke of sorts, in a song called if i "fell".

(20,219 posts)I get aggravated at wealthy AMERICANS bitching about taxes because our tax rates are low compared to most countries in the developed world. But taxes in the UK have always been higher and until 1985 they actually had a surcharge on investment income, with a net tax rate on investments of up to 95%.
unblock
(52,331 posts)the people in the top tax bracket still end up with more than anyone else, so it's obnoxious for them to publicly complain.
one can have the argument as to what the appropriate level may be, and arguably 95% is too high, fine.
that doesn't make the public whining any less annoying, at least not to me.
as for the song, i'd venture to say the vast majority of people don't hear it think, gee, 95% is too high (one for you nineteen for me), but 70% is entirely fair. such things inevitably encourage everyone to resent all taxes at any level.
the people at the top who are ending up with the most should set a good example and express pride in contributing the most to society.

(9,693 posts)The lyrics are heartbreaking, the 6/8 time signature, and the plagal cadence (subdominant to tonic chord)at the end really exposed the legitimacy of the group.

(6,568 posts)I love the tones George eeks out, so tasty (and tasteful).
My favorite Beatles song, however, is either "Norwegian Wood" or "Glass Onion". As a guitarist, neither are very significant, but the lyrics and vocal harmonies are what do it for me.

So, our favorite Beatles Song Is:
You Never Give Me Your Money/Mean Mr. Mustard/She Came in Through The Bathroom Window/Polythene Pam/Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers/The End ... cause they're all run together with only 1 tiny gap so they're basically one song ... works for me!
That was one friggin' EPIC last song on their last ever album ... hell of a sendoff to their career. The Exclamation Point, one might say.
Well, last to be made, not last to be released ... Abbey Road actually came out before Let It Be & Hey Jude (which was 'posthumously' released) though it was recorded last.

Read somewhere that "Hey Jude" is STILL the third biggest-selling recording in music history! Behind "Goodbye English Rose" (Elton John) and "White Christmas" (Bing Crosby).

(54,445 posts)Just the right combination of jazzy chords, wistful lyrics, just an inspired piece.
The trouble is, they recorded SO many inspired pieces. If you ask me in an hour, I might say something else entirely.
How can you pick out of Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, etc, and say there's ONE song that stands out among the rest?

(33,643 posts)Love me a bunch of the tracks from that era when John first started splattering Beatles songs with distorted guitar goodness like this one and Paperback Writer ... later culminating into the pure awesome that were Revolution and Helter Skelter on the White Album, and She So Heavy on Abbey.
