The look on his face - unfiltered and pure - is nothing short of remarkable.

It's like a pensive reflection, regret, possibilities; the eyes, the set of the mouth.

I was flying with a friend of mine, who, incidentally, had a second job as an Elvis impersonator. He owned a Piper Vagabond and he made an emergency landing the day before in the field behind our camp on Cayuga Lake.

He fixed the problem that caused the emergency landing (throttle cable was frayed - he swapped it out with a new one), and was going to fly it back to his airfield.

I helped him - a gopher thing - so he asked if I wanted to go with him. Of course, I jumped at the chance, but had to ask my Mom (I was 12). Mom, her day off and 3/4 in the bag, said it was fine so I ran back to Jerry's camp (the owner of the Vagabond) a few lots down and we strapped in and taxied to departure.

It then occurred to Mom that she gave me permission to fly out of a field that had never been used as an airfield. She ran to the apron of the field but it was too late. We'd started the takeoff roll and I waved at Mom, while she had this stricken look on her face.

No issues with the takeoff or any part of the flight. It was GLORIOUS!

Well, back on Earth, we drove back and Jerry dropped me off at my camp. Mom still had that stricken look, but it was for another reason. News had just broke that Elvis died. I walked over to Jerry's camp, an hr and a half after we departed it in the Vagabond. I broke the news to him, thinking I was going to break his heart. But, instead, he just shrugged and said, "I knew this was coming".

I've never seen a pic of Elvis like this. A real human being behind the facade. Thank you!

Looks like it shows a very human Elvis without all the glitz of his show persona. You're very fortunate to have it, thanks for sharing it with us!
