(67,405 posts)great. he put em down for being lousy musicians. they were self taught from listening to records so compared to musicians jones associated with they were amateurs. but being amateurs they did not know the rules and tried all sorts of things "real" quincy jones type musicians would avoid or disparage, thus rewriting the song form and structure and chord progression manual.

(12,213 posts)their songwriting, their personalities, their musicianship, their poetry, their ability to reach out to the public (I'm not eloquent enough to think of the word for that), and on and on. They were more than just self-taught musicians (and actually, McCartney did have some training and Lennon had voice training as a child).

(51,590 posts)and Sat Night Fever. John, Paul, George and Ringo saved me!!! The "quiet one" was always my favorite. I still have my set of 4 bubble gum rings with 3-D pictures of each of the Fab Four.

(9,729 posts)There can be no doubt that they changed the world. They certainly changed me - from someone who mostly only liked classical music to a full-blown "Beatlemaniac."

(4,512 posts)from that era. I can along later and by the mid 70's they sounded too polished to be interesting to me. It's all a matter of time and perspective.

(5,106 posts)so I assume you're referencing their work until that time. Remember that they were highly copied by other groups, and by the mid-Seventies, it had already become somewhat of a "classic" sound.

Woody Guthrie - Sure, he copied from me. But I copy from everyone!
Granted, being there is different, but perspective is important as well.

(5,106 posts)The point NOT being who copied from whom. Most music is derivative in some way.

(33,643 posts)For that very reason ... dude was a rocker at heart. And a lot of the tracks he brought aren't esp. polished if you think about it
1) And Your Bird Can Sing
2) Revolution (the distorted version not the slower slightly-boring one)
3) Helter Skelter (think Paul mostly wrote that one)
4) The Ballad of John and Yoko
5) She So Heavy
6) Dig a Pony
I also think Taxman (George) and Paperback Writer (Paul) are also great, legit rock and roll tracks, even if they might qualify as a bit more polished than the ones above.
