The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI suck at Video Games, kids just got a PS4...what can I play?
I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century
Really, Atari was about my speed...One joystick, One button
Now you have to up,down, left, right AND ABXYZ all at once!!!
So, in the Spirit of trying to be a "cool mom," I wanna try and learn the controller.
Maybe even get good enough to play one of those cool games like Walking Dead, or Until Dawn...
~ ~ ~
Anyone got some good suggestions for a newbie?
I just want to get better at my coordination so I can hold my own.
I even saw a Diablo 3 for PS4 and I loved the Diablo PC game...so that's some incentive!
Help a momma out!

Boy or Girl, and what age are they? Do they even WANT you to game w/them?
Besides Diablo what games have you played in past and enjoyed?
Lol there's more buttons that that, too ... Two Sticks, D-Pad (flat/round one from the old nintendo type games), then four buttons on front then the 4 front facing buttons (two buttons/two triggers).
Tell you what, do you have even the slightest bit of interest in the game of Golf? Cause I LOVE Hot Shots Golf (now called Everybody's Golf ...
Also Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends are awesome 2D platformers from PS3 days (On Edit ... no PS3 games on PS4 unless you subscribe to a Streaming service) but there's a PS4 version of Legends ) and those will DEFINITELY help you get your button usage and timing down and they are super-cute and fun games, as is Ori And The Blind Forest, very similar style of gameplay.

(13,360 posts)I wanna get better on my own/multiplayer fun
kids are 15-16
Then we wanna do more playthroughs...
ne is doing Last of Us right now...we've watched the youtubes of several games
we also got a copy of Until Dawn
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)So they're into the Zombie Apocalypse, eh? Right on ... I've not played either but played lots like 'em like Dead Rising 2 and Dead Island ... I'd like to play Last of Us but it's PS only and while I have a PS3 I'm much more of a PC gamer with an overclocked gaming rig with graphics card that's much more powerful than a PS3, so ... Hot Shots Golf is the only thing I ever fire it up to play ... PS exclusive.
I just finished the latest Tomb Raider (Rise of the Tomb Raider) after, like, a year of playing it off and on. It was quite good, as was the reboot of the franchise a few years back, just called Tomb Raider iirc.
Oh OH you know what else I played recently that I know is on PS4 that was awesome was Prey ... played it once then immediately played it again, I almost never do that. Sank like 120 hrs into the two playthroughs as there's lots to do ... VERY cool game ... single player though.

(11,799 posts)Try any of the Uncharted series. Great story line, great characters. It's like playing a movie. Be sure to set difficulty to easy, and enable hints. That Batman series is also very good. And you really only need to concentrate on one button most of the time. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck! It's a great and durable platform.

(19,240 posts)no strategy just strafe as you run. Kids love a mom who cleans up at DOOM.

(33,643 posts)times, good times ... gory as sh*t and HARD except on the easiest mode (which I fell back to on a few occasions esp. towards the end).
Games like Doom and esp. the above-mentioned Dark Souls 3 (c'mon man ... it's like one of the hardest games on the market!) are not the best choices for a novice with a PS4 controller. Gotta kinda work your way up to that stuff.
I think something like Rise of the Tomb Raider is a good choice for getting your feet wet with the controller, myself.

(19,240 posts)Give it another try and run into every fight like you don't give a shit. The games software is not prepared for that. It takes it a half a second to target you and in that half a second you are already gone.

(10,098 posts)It all depends on what types of games you like to play. Some mentioned in the thread are pretty heavy, although any game you can get into with enough play. I saw Dark Souls mentioned and no offense to the poster, but I would avoid that as one of your first games as well as Bloodborne, they are just too hard. Assassin's Creed games are amazing, but a bit of a steep learning curve for a new player imho.
A few games away from the major game corporation's first person fighting games like most of them recommended thus far would be Witness, a game reminiscent of Myst and was very interesting to play (but I had to cheat to finish). It is a puzzle game where you walk around and try to solve all of these various puzzles to proceed through the island, rather simple graphics for the systems' abilities. Another different, independent and quiet game is Firewatch. You play a firewatch ranger in a national park setting and the story plays out in various ways depending on your actions. Both of these are a lot less intensive than the games produced by the major companies.
My list from the big companies-
Dragon Age Inquisition - I about pooped my pants when I saw my first dragon on my little tv
Grand Theft Auto V - Rude, crude, offensive, but fun. You choose which criminal character you will play and the game has all kinds of crazy missions that are super fun- Super violent and language.
Middlle- Earth- Shadow of Mordor- These fantasy adventure ones all kind of run together, but this one was fun. The enemies talk a bunch of trash to you after they rip your head off.
I avoid the sports games like a plague, I never have liked them, button overload, but just mho.
There is a gaming group on DU, not a lot of activity, but you may want to check it out.
Peace

(33,643 posts)Lot's of Video Games are actually quite awesome
Many are very artistic, even if they don't reach the heights of a great novel, there's still much to admire.
A lot of them are quite towering achievements of a large group of people working very hard in all sorts of artistic arenas (as well as technical, admittedly).

If you just want to find some basic games to learn the controls with try the cheaper downloads in the p.s. store. There are some great $10 games from racing to pinball that aren't real complicated but still fun and should help you get a feel for the controllers

(554 posts)You said you like puzzles. Go to GameStop and get a copy of "The Talos Principle." It's a spectacular puzzle style game with a very cool story (Since i also saw that you like story games). It's very cerebral and you won't need the reflexes of a hyperactive 8 year old to play it.

I really like Journey and No Man's Sky, even though the latter is a bit broken.

(16,245 posts)You play as Aloy, in a post-apocalyptic world, where machines have become living beings. It's an RPG (role playing game).
Other favorites:
The Witcher 2: Wild Hunt.
Uncharted
Assassin's Creed series.
But I also love smaller, indie games. Right now I'm playing something called Unravel, where you play as a kid of knitted creature through all sorts of environments. Very cute and beautifully done.

Of course, you cant forget the likes of Knack 2, Nex Machina and Absolver. And these are the best gaming laptops under £1000 to play these games.
