walked by the local shoe store every day on our way home from school, and we often stopped in and x-rayed our feet just for fun. Our family always bought our shoes there, so the owner didn't mind.

We thought it was really cool to be able to see our foot bones. We'd x-ray our feet, then go home and play with blobs of mercury.

No kidding. My best friend and I spent significant time every Saturday at the JC Penney's that had this machine, with our bellies pressed up against it. I never saw anybody actually use it to test the fit of shoes, but it sure was fun to look at your toe bones through!
