(26,546 posts)Introduced to me by my Grandmother in the 60s. Yum. I might have to look for that tomorrow when I go to the store.

(15,805 posts)Sometimes we had the store bought cans, but they were a poor substitute for my grandma's recipe that was steamed in a large can in the pressure cooker. It was a genuine homemade treat served at breakfast or with tea or a hot toddy for a snack. We always made a flavored butter, like Orange-Honey, Molasses or Maple Butter to go with it.
Haven't made it for years, but now I'm wanting some. I'd have to order more molasses, and the rye and whole wheat flours, but it only takes about 40 minutes to cook 2-3 big cans in the pressure cooker.

(26,546 posts)My grandma from Mass would heat it in butter in a frying pan until it was toasted. Loved it. We always had Friends brand. My grandma could remember when the Friends brothers sold beans from their horse drawn wagon in Boston..

(50,557 posts)With New England baked beans, and they have to be THESE baked beans:
If you're not going to eat them from a jar, you may as well get Bush's. B&M in a can is still good...but it's just not the same.

(50,557 posts)They also have Spotted Dick and HP Sauce. Unfortunately, they're real thin on their Korean food assortment, which is a shame because Korean cuisine is getting popular in the US.

(12,132 posts)No dates or raisins, just pure sweet nut bread. She saved cans to make it in. The happiest day in my dad's life was when she relented and gave him the recipe. I got a couple loaves for Christmas every year and was really the only thing I looked forward to. Christmas ain't been the same since they passed.
No idea if the bread in a can is similar but I have pondered it as i strolled down the aisle at my grocery store. Not a fan of raisins though so never pulled the trigger.
There have been fights for the end piece. I don't usually care for the heel on a loaf of bread but this is way different.

(19,564 posts)Apparently it's a thing. I've made bread in cans many times before. Who knew they came already done that way?!
I can't vote, but I'm buying me a can of bread to check it out.
