Hyenas are not members of the dog or cat families. Instead, they are so unique that they have a family all their own, Hyaenidae. There are four members of the Hyaenidae family: the striped hyena, the “giggly” spotted hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf (it’s a hyena, not a wolf).

You may be referring to them being feliform, which includes mongooses, civets, and other cat-like animals in addition to cats. So hyenas and cats are both feliform, but hyenas are not cats.

The dog alternative is caniform, which includes seals, walruses, sea lions, otters, badgers, weasels, bears, etc. in addition to dogs.

It's true that hyenas were considered caniform but they switched them to feliform.
