Do any DUers live in a pecan growing region?

I just got back from my grocery store intending to buy some pecans to make a coffee cake .... I almost fainted .... ten ounces of pecan pieces, not even halves, but pieces ... ten ounces for $12?? Is there a pecan shortage now??

thank you for any replies in advance!

I'm not aware of any shortages other than the fact that we are about 3 months away from harvesting. You are probably getting the dregs from the 2017 harvest.

If you have prime and it’s an “add on” item. And they’re much fresher than anything in a bag this time of the year.
They’re salted but you could rub 90% of that off.
They’re so expensive it’s worth buying from good growers in the late fall and feezing them.

We have pecan trees in our yard, and always have more than we know what to do with. Hit me up in September; I’ll mail you some.

a pecan tree in my yard and the harvest can vary wildly from year to year. I've had a few years when I didn't get any pecans at all and a couple of bumper crops. When I compare notes with other people, it seems like everyone experiences the same each year.

We used to pick up the ones from our trees and take them to Sheffield Pecan Company to trade for shelled pecans. Now we just let the ants and the squirrels have our pecans and buy the ones we need from the stores.

Sheffield right now is selling pecans at $12 a pound but they may go down in the fall. http://www.sheffieldpecans.com

We've found that we can get pecans right after the holidays for a discount at Publix and throw them in the freezer for the next time I want to make pecan pies.
