Years ago I watched a coop for neighbors who were on vacation and in the morning I found the Rooster dead, he had been killed by the hens

I could maybe see a bunch of adult hens killing a sickly and/or young one but other than that? no. I bet something else killed it and they were just pecking at the body.

roosters will fight each other, especially if they don't know each other and deaths might happen if the smaller/weaker one couldn't get away. in general, chickens work out their pecking order (hence where that term comes from) pretty quickly and harmlessly as long as they have enough room.

I'm trying to figure out if I have enough space for 3. I've been told they don't like to be alone. I'd really like a silkie because they are just too cute. They look like something Dr Suess invented.

if you raise them/it from a chick they will bond and become very pet-like so don't need others. but if you aren't around all the time 2 or 3 would be better.

it was an offer I couldn't turn down. woman wanted $20 a head for hens so after not having any for like a year or more, I was ready to just drop the cash on 5 (it would cost me three times that to raise and feed a dozen or more to end up with 5 if I was lucky) but she asked if I needed any roosters. um no, I have one already - the only fowl I have had for months. she says if I take some roosters she will give me the hens for free. yes I am a sucker so now I have 4 roosters and 6 hens, not a good ratio, but I still have $100 in the chicken budget so I will be looking for some more hens in a couple of weeks if these don't all get eaten right away. (we had a family of foxes move in close last spring, I am hoping they have moved on, haven't seen them in a while)

There are a lot of chicken breeders around here, Andalusian, Polish- I can't recall the rest - but beautiful birds. All kinds, really.

Some breed for show and some for food.

Having a chick sale now at the local breeders here. Shame you aren't closer. I mean that. Lots of good deals to be had.

I like chickens. We're hoping for a transfer soon, so we can move to a bigger place and with a bigger yard - because I want chickens.

just when they are feathered out and running around - seems to be the most delicious stage of life for coyotes. SIGH

Various constrictor snakes, birds of prey, and raccoons are the most danger here for chickens.

I have dogs and I worry about them being too rough. Not attacking but playing too rough.

We shall see.

Thanks!!

I have ants in my house and I'm having a hard time getting rid of them. Do they come in red? Chicken should match my kitchen appliances.
