Some great shots in this piece. I'd love a whole bedroom wall covered in these photos! I think Fred Astaire dancing with his Siamese is my favorite... Elegant and whimsical. Plus, I'm partial to Siamese and am proudly owned by a Lilac Point/Balinese.

(28,127 posts)Of what use is studying animals hanging upside down for long periods?

(34,138 posts)As part of testing to see how animals could handle a disruption of their senses of up and down. The kitten doesn't look all that upset with his position, but I agree - by today's standards that was cruel.

(28,127 posts)My hubs even studied, wrote papers, and has a patent on that. I'm an idiot tho.
Here was my thinking, because I did think of NASA studies (not enough obviously):
Anything in space is weightless. Without the force of gravity, being "upside down" is meaningless. And most all NASA acclimating-to-space studies are done inside a freefalling plane. Water tanks have sometime been used but only to get astronauts used to working in a space environment but it's not entirely equivalent to the freefall. It somewhat helps them to acclimate to working extra-vehicularly in space, as they have had to do in working on the ISS
Thought I'd run this ☝ past the resident physicist here, so he corrected me and reminded me of the intracranial studies.
There are many reasons human are not adapted to space travel but one of the greatest problems is rooted in our intracranial pressure.

(34,138 posts)I have never gotten too deep into the science of NASA, just enjoyed the fruits of their work on the space program, growing up as they reached the moon.
I wish I still had our family's neurological expert to consult - my sister was a neuro-physiologist though her expertise was in computer tomography of the brain.
Thank your husband for the information he provided!

(28,127 posts)The info I've learned thru hubs is that extended space travel is much more dangerous and difficult then the public realizes. Space radiation and travel can cause cancer, cataracts, and even dementia, among other things.
Anyway, I'm against cruelly lab testing critters.

(1,563 posts)We've had seven Siamese over the years. They're so affectionate, and smart, and all-around great cats. Present ones are male blue point, female seal point.
