(796 posts)to search out the artist and buy the record or 45. if you had a tape recorder and the top 5 at 9 every night, maybe bootleg with DJ over the top of beginning/end. i taped songs off the radio all the time-just had to recognize the opening bars/intro, the best part of any song. the subtle beginning.
i have a huge virtual and RL music library but won't give digital to my son until i've played equivalent on turntable. he doesn't get discographies, a song or two, or albums he needs to hear(he plays drums and guitar-he's 10, also into cirque du soleil air-crobatics).
the loss of on air radio is a shame of progress in some ways, better in others. just controlled by the same supply end assholes.
i spent 1000s of $$ on vinyl, cassette and cd. actually owned 4 8 tracks- destroyer, highway to hell, jim croce greatest, bing crosby christmas.

(100,068 posts)Only difference is now we have iTunes, YouTube, and Google that add to the search. There's literally *TONS* of great new music out there being made. The people who complain about it either don't care or aren't looking for it.

The good news is theres something for everyone provided you look outside the mainstream if thats not what does it for you. The bad news is that truly inspired and talented artists are going to have a tougher time incorporating large productions that involve many musicians because they cant appeal to larger audiences.

(100,068 posts)I saw Chromeo on Friday and they kicked ass. And then I saw Coheed and Cambria on Saturday. Both bands have new albums out this year and they're both amazing. If you say there's no good music being made you're not paying attention.

(16,423 posts)I always hated this song. Hated it. The whispers of the lead-singer are as loud as the keyboard, the shredding electric guitar, the drums... Everything has the same volume. It just sounds wrong.

(6,112 posts)My 20-year-old nephew said "You're just old". True that. I tried, I really, really tried to like modern music. I would sit through hours of nauseatingly tepid music to accustom myself to the rhythms. It didn't work.
The lyrics just didn't mean anything. When I saw this video, I kept thinking "YES"! I sent it to my 20-year-old nephew, but I don't know if he has the attention span needed to get through it.

(20,185 posts)There has always been pop music. You can't compare The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. Compare old pop music to new pop music, old rock to new rock. Yes, I tend to listen to music from my youth. Most people do. But I'm not goig to say ALL old music is better than ALL new music. That's just arrogant.
That being said, things like autotune and compression software take the soul out of music. I also don't like songs written by commitee, with 4 or 5 songwriters on a single song.

(6,881 posts)From radio to records to albums to MTV to iPod to internet and smartphones. The main venue for exposure now is through the internet which focuses much more on the personalities of performers, rather than the music or live shoes. Kids go to live shows now because they like the players more than the music. It's not awful at all. It's just different for a different generation and technology.
