3. Where I went to school in the '50s everyone went home for lunch.
Except on a few special days. I was the person who instigated this article- If you make it, skip the cornstarch.

19. Can't post a picture from my phone, but in 1955, I had a Davey Crockett
lunch box and thermos. I see it would be worth almost $500 today. Not bad since it probably cost $1.99 back then.

![]() This was my first and last lunch box. I was given the task of keeping it clean, which I did until I didn't. It sat for an entire summer with a old sandwich saran wrap, various crumbs and some leftover juice in the thermos. It was made of that softish plastic that would hold smells, and boy did it ever. I was heading to 4th grade and decided I was a big boy now anyway, so that was that. |

34. No lunch box
Everyone - all 300 of us - ate the prepared lunch in the school cafeteria. No one packed. Some days it was great - tomato soup and grilled cheese to die for. Or sloppy joes with potato chips on the side. We NEVER had potato chips at home so you know I loved that lunch. Other days when it was mashed potatoes, weiners, and sauerkraut - not so great. To make matters worse the odor of that lunch lingered into the next morning. Bleh!
I really wanted an Annette lunch box though. Or some days, one with Dale Evans on the front. |

35. Mine Was A Plain Red Lunch Box.....
...inherited from my older sister, who, in turn, got it from our older brother. I stopped using it when the red paint flakes rubbed off on my sandwich, which was wrapped in wax paper, and turned soggy by lunch time.
After that I went home for lunch. Made my own bologna with lots of mustard, or cold hot dog sandwiches. Best part of lunch was no one else was home, so I could watch what I wanted on TV. Most of the time I was late getting back to school! |
