Tanks and submarines, no thank you, not for me. My corps had tanks on the E. German border. No fun when it's way below freezing.

(66,462 posts)Takes forever to get it started, but works pretty well once it's going.
I've had the experience of doing a winter road march with my top half out of the hatch, freezing cold, and my lower half, inside the tank, almost uncomfortably warm from the heater.
As far as the life-expectancy of a tank crewman, we used to like to joke that it was pretty short in full-up tank-to-tank combat; somewhere between seven seconds and a minute. Of course, that was back when we thought the next war was going to be a conventional armored war with the Soviets in Central Europe. Thousands and thousands of tanks in an all-out slugging match.
It didn't turn out that way, thank goodness...
