Spanish flu was probably the worst catastrophe of the 20th century. The current estimate is that it killed at least 50m people and perhaps as many as 100m. At minimum, therefore, it ended the lives of three times as many as died in the first world war (in the region of 17m). It was probably also more lethal than the second world war (60m), and may well have outstripped the effects of both wars put together. The death toll was so high partly because Spanish flu was truly pandemic (some 500m people, more than a quarter of those then alive, are believed to have been infected), and partly because of its high mortality rate (5-10%, compared with 0.1% for subsequent influenza epidemics).

(115,686 posts)A couple of my relatives (great-great aunts/uncles) died of Spanish flu. I got the Hong Kong flu during that pandemic - different strain but really nasty. Don't mess with the flu.

This is the cue for anti-vaxxers to post info from the CDC explicating the relative efficacy of the yearly flu vaccine, and to triumphantly shout: "Debunked"!"
Whatever makes them happy...
It's important to note that even if the vaccine developed turns out not to conform to the virus that arises, of if the virus mutates beyond the strict conformation of the antibodies created by the vaccine, the vaccine can still provide at least partial immunity to the virus.
Researchers believe this may have happened early in the Spanish Flu epidemic. In the early months of 1918, many people in the Mid West and in New England were infected and became ill with what is thought to be a milder version of the Spanish Flu that killed so many later that year and into 1919. When the full-blown version arose later, these patients were found to be immune. The milder form conferred protection from the more virulent form of the virus.
Partial immunity is better than none at all. And if you carry the viral antibodies, you are part of a huge human shield protecting those who for whatever reason are not able to receive the vaccine.
Be a hero. Get your flu shot.
