"people food" with gusto. My newer rescue, not so much. They are who they are. The doggie in the OP is so sweet!!!

In fact his dog food - Wellness brand - is usually either chicken and broccoli or turkey and spinach.

We supplement it with cans of food that look like stew that human beings would eat. The quality really is impressive (no broccoli though).

I hope the food is helping, my dogs have been on prescription diets too. The vet has also recommended sweet potato and pumpkin for certain issues. And my previous dog had acupuncture when he began having trouble getting around. It did a lot of good, and since I'd had it myself, I knew that it didn't hurt - and it's not invasive. He was able to walk just fine after that - and he was at least 18.

He's still functioning fine and we follow all the veterinarian's advice for preventative maintenance, to ward off any unnecessary acceleration of our dog's arthritis and hip dysplasia: the specific food, limiting his exercise to walks (running, particularly with quick, torquing turns is terrible for him -- the ideal exercise is swimming but he only likes to wade, not swim) and we keep his weight down because carrying too many pounds is harder on his joints.

We have anti-inflammatories/pain killers on hand for the occasions when he overdoes it and feels the consequences of it later in the day. But we also purchased CBD oil as an alternative because the pills can be hard on the liver. We haven't started him on the CBD oil though because after we purchased it and read the instructions, it says it should be administered daily. He's not at a stage where a daily treatment seems necessary yet. Most days are still good.

So we'll continue to monitor him closely. Great dog. The best we've ever had.

I've never had a big dog - I need to be able to carry them if I have to. I've had both cocker spaniels - since I grew up with one - and terriers. My Jack is a Brussels Griffon, a fairly unusual breed. Whenever he goes anywhere I'm used to hearing "what kind of dog is that??"

and I've seen pictures. In some images, the dogs have a "bearded" look. In others, they have short hair on their faces and more resemble a pug. Which does yours look like?

I have had two, both rescue and they have both been the rough coat. The only thing is that my Meneken weighed 8 pounds, they are usually 10 pounds and under. Jack was 8 pounds when he found me at 5 months, but he's over 20 pounds now and not just because he's a little chubby, he's just a bigger dog. But he's a sweet little guy and he's my baby, though he's not as portable as his "brother" was... As for the beards, mine have never had them, they get in their food.

In the past, I've adopted older dogs. My cocker spaniel Barney was 10 or 11 when he found me - and I had him 8 years. Two of my dogs have lived past 18, but Jack is my puppy! He's fortunately been healthy, but I still worry...
