Getting to be a lot of friends and acquaintances getting them, just thought a place to discuss success or not would be good..... Ill start...... into my 12th day of my left TKR (total knee replacement) and my knee is buckling. Scares the hell out of me. Dont fall as im using a walker. Have discussed with my PT women and they say its because my quadricep muscle isnt strong enough yet. So Im thinking fine, will work my ass off getting that baby as strong as I can. Then reading stuff on the inter webs, which ill admit I should have read before my surgery, some people experienced buckling after their surgery as well. I was wondering is anyone here had this experience after their surgery. Im so disappointed.....I thought the replacement was going to improve my walking, not make it worse......my knee NEVER buckled before the surgery. Im upset.....I still have 9 PT appointments left and I am doing my exercises 3 times a day at home.....im Just praying and hoping when im through will all my PT that the quad will be strong and my knee wont be buckling. Anyone else??

(29,067 posts)I remember, at your stage, I was still in a lot of pain, though it was mitigated by drugs.

(29,067 posts)Knee pain can be quite severe, in my experience....Not to be trifled with.

(251 posts)I've worked in a physical rehab facility before and have seen how much it takes for a full recovery from TKR and hip surgeries. What you're describing is pretty normal, keep doing PT. Keep the skills they've taught you and keep doing even after your sessions are done! Keep your head up and hands on your walker 😊

(29,663 posts)good advise. I'm so emotional too, I think it's the drugs. Thanks, the PT women are wonderful, very supportive, but at home I just get depressed about how long it's taking. I feel a lot better now, just reading this.

(4,661 posts)It took me longer than that just to start hobbling around! Give it another month and you'll be better I predict.
I could fill a joint replacement forum by myself. Both hips 25 years ago, one shoulder five years ago, one knee two years ago. In the last five years (with time off for surgery and recovery) I have logged 1200 miles on my Runkeeper app and run ten 5K races.
I medal in all my races. Not because I'm fast, but because the "women over 70" category never has more than three entrants. Sometimes I'm the only one, and I win First Place.
Back to your knee... Are you able to take painkillers? I can't, and I was miserable for weeks; the knee replacement was harder than the others. You're doing PT, and home exercises, so I think it will just take time. Does it buckle every time you stand up? I'm hesitant to ask this, but is your weight a factor? Mine was, and losing weight at my doctor's advice made recovery faster.
