back in the mid and late '60s and the first half of the '70s, Ted Nugent knew how to write and perform rock and roll. He had several terrific tunes.

Yes, I can link to YouTube videos, when I get around to it.

Here's one: Begun, on this day in 1860, the Pony Express.

Yes, it's possible for this to be true and for Ted Nugent to be a giant jerk.

Ted Nugent (1975)
Free-for-All (1976)
Cat Scratch Fever (1977)

As well as

Double Live Gonzo! (1978)

That's pretty much it. They sold in the truckloads and got a lot of airplay, but his career started the slow free-fall off the cliff shortly after that.

The main reason is that he'll never pass Jann Wenner's smell test. Wenner is NEVER GOING TO put him up for a vote.

I liked all kinds of bands in the 60s and 70s and have an extensive LP collection. But Nugent was just a regional act that didn't even measure up to Grand Funk, and they were just ok. Just three chord teen boy pounding on his pud music. And I felt that way back then, long before I knew anything about his odious politics.

That's why he isn't in it.

I'd bet the farm that Wenner sees Nugent as "vulgar, dishonest and obscene as well as talentless," and as long as he does, he'll never come up for a vote.

The R&RHOF is tethered to Jann Wenner's personal tastes in music, as well as the way he views the bands or musicians who do or do not get in.

There's a LONG list of performers who should be in, and another list of performers who perhaps do not deserve the honor who got in first.

As long as Wenner's in charge, Nugent doesn't stand a chance.

As a teenage member of a semi-obscure band prior to his pants-shitting ploy, which he subsequently bragged about. As a solo "artist" he has substituted excessive volume and bravado for a lack of musical ability. Not a player. Not a writer. Not a singer. Two-time HOF inductee Croz had it 100% correct on this wannabe hack.

Ted Nugent says it's "vulgar, dishonest and obscene" that he's not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

should be shortened to:

Ted Nugent is vulgar, dishonest and obscene.

See? That wasn't so hard, was it? No need to get wordy, there, Teddy Boy.

The least of which is that your artistry must have had some influence on other popular bands over the years.

I can't think of anyone, in a popular band or otherwise, who can point to Ted Nugent as an inspiration for their masterwork. Ted Nugent plays guitar like a serious tenth-grader at a serious American high school.

Stop alerting already.

Look, back in the '60s and early '70s Ted Nugent had some killer tunes.

Google DU for "Amboy Dukes."

Here is the one song that I think should qualify him forever. Ted Nugent's solo starts at 1:22.

This is a great garage band song. How Ted Nugent went from that to ... what he is now is beyond me. As for the other members of the group:

The Amboy Dukes
....

Later happenings

Nugent went on to have a successful solo career in the 1970s and joined the Damn Yankees supergroup in the late 1980s. Since the 2000s, Nugent (although continuing his rock career) has been a prominent activist, both for hunting and for conservative politics.

Vocalist Rusty Day joined The Detroit Wheels, replacing Mitch Ryder as lead vocalist. Under Day, that band was renamed "Detroit;" it disbanded in 1974. He then returned to his previous band, Cactus, in 1976, playing with them until 1979. After turning down offers to front AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd after the deaths of those bands' respective lead singers, Day was shot dead in 1982.

Bassist Rob Grange gelled with Nugent on the last two Dukes albums and went forward with him to help create the first four platinum albums of Nugent's solo career.

Bassist Greg Arama died in 1979.

Steve Farmer currently teaches in Redford Township, Michigan. He also performs with backing bands at various venues in and around the Detroit area.

Rick Lober is a classically trained composer best known in the greater Detroit metro area for his frenetic style of keyboard playing. Since the early 1990s, he has been in and out of the studio, appearing as performer/songwriter on the Steve Farmer CD Journey to the Darkside of the Mind (Saint Thomas Records, STP0069) completed in 2000. He is currently working in the studio and performing live with local Detroit rock legend Jeffrey Faust and his band "The Woodsman", which performs throughout Michigan and Canada.

In 2008, the Amboy Dukes were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.

Here they are from 1974:

Call of the Wild (Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes album)

I guess he need the Amboy Dukes to keep him stable.

Another from 1974:

Tooth Fang & Claw

Everything I've linked to is over forty years old. But don't tell me that this guy couldn't play.

One of the best albums of all time is Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era. I've got the 1976 Sire re-release. It is a gem.

I cannot argue with you about the quality of the garage bands whose songs are on that album. Some gems left on the cutting room floor were as worthy as the songs that did make the cut.

While looking up old threads at DU mentioning the Amboy Dukes (Google DU for "Amboy Dukes."), I came across this one with garage band classics:

i need help with my "Ultimate Garage Band set-list"

here's what i have so far
1.louie louie, the kingsmen
2.gloria, them
3.wild thing, the troggs
4.hey joe, the leaves
5.stepping stone, the monkees
6.96 tears, ? and the mysterians
7.wooly bully, sam the sham and the pharoahs
8.hang on sloopy, the mc coys
9.house of the rising sun, the animals
10.pushin' too hard, the seeds
11.she's about a mover, sir douglas quintet
12.telstar, the tornadoes
13.runaway, del shannon
14 la bamba, ritchie valens
15.psychotic reaction, the count 5
16.wipeout, the surfaris
17.twist and shout, the isley brothers
18.you're gonna miss me, 13th floor elevators
19.walk don't run, the ventures
20.dirty water, the standells
21.shakin' all over, johnny kidd and the pirates
22.doo wah diddy, manfred mann
23.secret agent man, johnny rivers
24.liar liar, the castaways
25.misirlou,dick dale and the del tones
26.rumble, link wray
27.surfin' bird, the trashmen
28.tequila, the champs
29.the hanky panky, tommy james and the shondells
30.pipeline, chantays
31.green onions, booker t and the mgs
32.apache, the shadows

{Wait: The Monkees are a garage band? Okay, we might have some differences of opinion here.}

Per Miles Archer, Jann Wenner's opinion of what constitutes timeless music counts a lot in determining who gets into the RRHoF.

Thanks for writing.

Adding:

I used to listen to Little Steven's Underground Garage back when it was broadcast locally by WARW, at 94.7 MHz. I can't get them anymore. I know, they're online, but it's not the same.

I taped, on cassettes, several of the broadcasts. By coincidence, I brought a Panasonic version of a Walkman that I found this morning while preparing to go to work. When I opened it, I found a Sex Pistols tape inside. I might just swap that out and put in a Little Steven tape, if I can find one.

That will be me with a big smile on my face on the Red Line this afternoon.
