Reviews I've read, and my own viewing of part of the first episode, confirm that the makers of this show use the novel as a starting point only -- typical for a Phil Dick adaptation, unfortunately.

It's very different from the book, but very good science fiction in its own right. It's more enjoyable if you just ignore where they got the idea from.
