NRA Woes - No more free coffee/water coolers at HQ

The National Rifle Association is getting some “thoughts and prayers” amid a new report of financial struggles.

The Trace, a nonprofit group that reports on gun violence, said the NRA has ditched free coffee and yanked water coolers at its Virginia headquarters due to a cash crunch.

“The whole building was freaking out,” an unnamed source told the website.

The news comes months after Rolling Stone reported the organization claimed its financial struggles were so dire it may soon “be unable to exist” due to an ongoing legal battle in New York.

The Trace also noted that NRA revenue from membership dues fell by $35 million last year, leading to dues increases and less spending on the midterm elections

Article has tweets from people sending NRA "Thoughts and Prayers" to carry it thru its difficult financial storm:

If the NRA goes down, what will become of them? What, I ask you! What?

You know, the ones that have soaking AR-15 bullets in them?
Or how about the gun raffles everyday? Or the free ammo if you work late program? Poor NRA. They are bought by the ENEMY OF THE STATE...Russssssia. Say it like a snake.

Even though I'm a registered Democrat and have voted for Democrats only in every election since I was eligible, I got calls DAILY from the NRA the last 2 weeks before the mid-terms. They got the $$ fom somewhere, did Russia pony up again? Anyway this frugal nonsense is just that, if they were so poor why did they blow my phone up with their robo-calls 14 days in a row? I call major BS, probably just trying to hide the $$ from the state of NY.

Donations from the gun&ammo industry cover most of their costs. They are in effect the lobbying arm of that industry.

We know that Putin funnels millions through the NRA to influence elections. I'm guessing that the NRA doesn't receive cash. Instead, they get the robot callers, social media bots, mailers, and other "marketing and communications" campaign resources.

The cash goes directly to politicians as "contributions from the NRA."

The NRA probably is cash poor.

1. This is the beginning of the end. (Duh)
2. That $35 million dollars in dues smells bad to me. Isn't that how much money the NRA was getting from Russia?
3. The next step in cost cutting will be single ply tissue in the restrooms.
4. The only way they can get back their mojo is to bend over all their membership, and take it from their wallets. Perhaps a new scare tactic is in order- "Nancy (Pelosi) is coming to take your guns".
5. The gun manufacturers who are the real beneficiaries of the NRA do not have the money to put in to this. Gun sales have been in a slump ever since DFT was elected. Gun sales only go up when the NRA uses the fear tactic and having House, Senate and WH in GOP control doesn't sell fear to the RWGNs.

... that despite repeated calls from gun-control advocates to establish mandatory liability insurance for gun owners, a major source of the NRA's financial woes is the State of New York's crusade against them for offering exactly that?

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is hoping an effort to end an insurance policy run by the National Rifle Association will damage its finances — and he is urging other states to follow.

Cuomo in recent days has ramped up his criticism of the NRA after it filed legal papers to try to overturn the state's decision earlier this year to end the NRA's insurance program called, "Carry Guard."

New York contended the program is illegal because it gave liability protection to gun owners for acts where there was "intentional wrongdoing."

In April 2018, the New York State Department of Financial Services sent “guidance letters” to banks and insurance companies. It wrote, “The Department encourages its insurers to continue evaluating and managing their risks, including reputational risks, that may arise from their dealings with the NRA or similar gun promotion organizations… The Department encourages regulated institutions to review any relationships they have with the NRA or similar gun promotion organizations, and to take prompt actions to managing these risks and promote public health and safety.”

Two weeks later, the department announced consent decrees with two insurers, imposing millions of dollars in fines and barring them from selling consumer insurance products that are endorsed by the NRA.

At least according to Lockton, their major underwriter:

Lockton Affinity® offers comprehensive personal firearms liability insurance, including self-defense insurance, for those who lawfully carry firearms and their families, including protection against civil liability, the cost to defend against civil and criminal legal actions and immediate access to attorney referrals.
