Of all the things I make for Thanksgiving, the homemade cranberry sauce is the easiest.

Put three bags of cranberries and a cup of orange juice and some orange zest in a pan and bring it to a boil.
Add some maple syrup (enough to sweeten), a pinch of cinnamon and ground cloves.
When the cranberries start to soften, mash them with a potato masher.
If the consistency is too runny for you, stir in some cornstarch slurry until you get the proper consistency.

Takes about 10 minutes.

It's hard to remove both ends so the cranberry jelly can be pushed through. You can lose the can indentations on the jelly which is just sad.

And it's fun to dump it on a plate, it goes *plorp* and the can's seams and indentations are imprinted on the quivering red cylinder. It's so perfectly fake-looking, I love it.

Susan Stamberg. That said, I never heard her say that I'm more aware of her controversial cranberry relish. I like it, but almost always forget until the day before and that doesn't give it time to develop it's flavor.

Stick the whole thing in a pillsbury pie crust. Bake at 350. Takes 10 minutes to prepare and it's the best pie EVAH!

add sugar to taste. it is quite good.

i boil cranberries w/ sugar + fr orange juice + a fruity liquor. started w/ raspberry liquor. when cooked enough, add fr raspberries + fr blueberries(opt).

but i also like my crushed cranberries, mandarin orange + whipped cream, frozen. defrost a bit. add more whipped cream as needed. i took out the mini marshmallows. my great-aunt viola's had apples. seemed wrong.

email contained this recipe:

12 oz. cranberries
1/4 C light brown sugar
1/4 C white sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C orange juice
2 Tbsp. dark rum
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. freshly grated ginger
1 cinnamon stick
1 star anise

Add all of the ingredients to a medium saucepan and place over medium-low heat. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until the cranberries have burst and the sauce has reduced slightly. Give it a taste and adjust sweetener if needed. Remove cinnamon stick and star anise. Transfer to refrigerator to chill.

(I go ahead and can it so that it's shelf stable which gives me a jar for Christmas)

You can make it with any fruit, but this was made w/ Cranberries, sugar, apple cider vinegar and fresh sage. My SIL's mother made it. Not sure of the exact recipe but variations are on google. It's a maceration of the above in a mason jar and you use a tablespoon of the mixture w/ mineral water, seltzer, or your favorite mixed beverage (I actually put mine in some ginger ale).

It's an old colonial recipe and the vinegar sounds off-putting, but it's really good! I think I am going to try it with other fruits as my new go-to beverage mix. You can use any combo of fruits, herbs, etc. but the constants are the vinegar and sugar (or other sweetener).

Has anyone else ever had this before?
