Alaska Airlines' new carry-on size limit is 22" x 14" x 9" including the wheels and handles. Which means I need to get a new bag.
What's good, fits in those dimensions, and is not outrageously expensive - say, $150 max?

(1,975 posts)Fits under the seat. But we're not usually going far (Fairbanks - Anchorage, etc.). Seems to work with enough toiletries/undies for the day it'll take to actually find your luggage!

(50,557 posts)I think I may have to check a bag this time, as much as I hate it...I need two cameras to do this trip, and they're both big.

(1,975 posts)We usually have one camera on us and one (the good one) packed and checked. Never even lost a lens. Never lost a bag, for that matter. I guess a lot depends on where you're going from and to. We even like their small-plane affiliates up here; they're scrupulous.

(11,648 posts)On checked baggage. I flew with my bicycle in a box from Portland OR to Santiago Chile for $0.00 in luggage fees. If it's the same, put almost everything into your checked luggage.

(31,384 posts)I bought a 3 piece set 11 years ago after our house fire. Two pieces going strong after a lot of use--more for the carry on--and my son left the big case in Berlin. I couldn't believe it when he came through customs after spending 10 months in Berlin and he didn't bring the big bag home. When I asked him where it was he said he didn't want to pay the fee for it! WTF? He was using my credit card. Somebody got a really nice piece of luggage for free.

(34,136 posts)Actually, probably two sets, one for me, one for my husband. Our large softsided bag did not survive our cruise in October, maybe because my husband over packed it. So I'd thinking about a three bag set for each of us, maybe hard sided.
We're taking an 18 day cruise over, spending three months in Britain, then a 14 day cruise back, so we need to carry a lot of stuff. Clothes, cameras, tablet, laptop,, needlework stuff, and more. Most of the stuff we acquire in Britain will be shipped back so we don't have to carry souvenirs.
Any suggestions as to brands, or particular sets?
Thanks!

(34,136 posts)We're excited about going - this will be our trip of a lifetime!
After having a heart valve replaced and a kidney removed in fall of 2017 I decided that I wanted to take this trip I had dreamed about for decades and planned to do it next year. Then I found out that there will be a special program this year with a needlework designer who I have followed since the 1980s so I moved my plans up.
We're going to have a blast! Bird watching, genealogy and sightseeing all over Britain. We may go to Northern Ireland but I doubt it.
Our cruise over leaves Ft. Lauderdale then visits New York, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Iceland, Scotland, Dublin and ends in Southampton but we're getting off at Glasgow (actually Greenrock). Then the cruise back will go from Southampton to St. Maartin, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, and Haiti before returning to Florida.
I just hope we don't wear ourselves out before we're done, but we can stop and rest at any point other than the special needlework tour.

(34,136 posts)Our old ones were soft side and as I said my husband overstuffed the big one and the seam burst while being transported off the ship. I thought about getting hardsided luggage but I'm not sure.

I personally can attest to their durability. You can find used Globetrotters on ebay
