They are about 1/3 that size around here.

Pretty cool except for the hummingbird shit in your kitchen.

Every day, 83-year-old Joao Silvestrini has the most unusual visitor – a hummingbird! It flies in and out of the kitchen window of his Brazil home several times a day, stopping for a chirpy chat and a drink of sugar water.

The story of the unusual friendship between man and bird has become popular on Facebook, after Joao filmed the bird and posted the video online, last month. The footage shows the tiny bird flying around Joao’s head and waiting patiently until he offers it the daily dose of sugar sweetened water.

Joao is a bachelor and a retired ornithologist; he wakes up at 5.30 every morning to open the kitchen window and wait for his little friend. Before long, the bird arrives in search of water and continues the routine several times during the day. “When he wants water, he is flying around me, he will not let me use the computer,” Joao laughed.

Of course there was a hummingbird feeder in the tree. If the hummingbird was out and about, I could call him by making sounds, and he would fly right up to me. I wish they lived a lot longer. I miss that bird.

I have had a lot of different hummingbirds in that tree over the years, but he was special. As long as he was in earshot, he would come flying right up to my face. It was amazing. He knew who was feeding him, that's for sure.

And to have that kind of trust coming from a wild creature, it will always be a blessing to have those memories.

I love hummingbirds! I would love to be able to attract them - I remember one coming to my fuchsia and it was fascinating to watch!

Did you know that their eggs are the size of peas? One little factoid I've never forgotten.
