The 11-month-old, 6.5-pound, gray-and-white feline with green eyes and white whiskers had climbed the 30-foot-tall cedar tree Monday but wouldn’t come down, despite pleadings by his owner, Christine Conte, 71, of Parlin Street.

She and her daughter, Anne Madore, 52, who lives next door, tried everything. They and other family members called fire and police and an animal control officer but were told those officials don’t rescue cats from trees. While sympathetic, they advised Conte to put food on the ground beneath the tree. Eventually the cat would come down, they said. They sought to reassure her.

“The policeman said, ‘No cat skeletons have ever been found in trees,'” Conte recalled.

Conte was beside herself as Bubba remained perched, day and night, in the tree, through snow and rain and wind.
“You feel helpless,” Conte said. “You can’t eat; you can’t sleep. You open the door and your cat’s crying. Eating’s a hard thing, when you feel helpless and nobody’s coming to help you. I said, ‘Bubba, nobody’s coming. You’ve got to get yourself down.'”

1. I had almost the exact same thing happen with my cat!

Except, I had to rescue her myself. And it was four stories up. But she was caught out all night in a big snowstorm. She sat right by the chimney and meowed all night so that I could hear her suffering. It was awful!

3. I was going crazy. I didn't get much (if any) sleep that night

I lived on the top floor of a three story condo building. However, the third floor condos all had 16' ceilings, so "4 stories". She went out on the balcony in the afternoon and decided to climb up on the roof. Then she was afraid to come down. I tried various things to get her down, but she just wouldn't budge. Then it started snowing! In the morning, we had 8" of new snow, so there was no way she was going to make it down on her own. I called the fire department, police, humane society, anyone I thought could help. No luck. So I went over to my sister's place and borrowed some of my BIL's climbing gear. I threw a rope over the roof and tied it off to the balcony. Then I used ascenders [here is what they look like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascender_(climbing) ] to make my way up the rope to the roof. I brought a duffel bag with me to put her in. When I got up there, she was terrified. I barely got her to come close enough that I could grab her and stuff her in the bag.

4. OMG to the rescue too!!! You are one brave person. What we do for our pets.

5. The funniest part was that I was out there, in the snow, getting ready to climb the rope

when a neighbor walked by. He just sort of nodded and said hello like this was nothing out of the ordinary.
