The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI took Boudicca to the vet, this morning, full expecting to bring her home in a cremation box
But.... she is defying the odds and actually put on a few ounces of weight! Admittedly, I am over indulging her with treats, but the vet said that's the right thing to do, now.
The tumor hasn't grown and no there's infection, so another shot of steroids and antibiotics, some appetite triggering medication and she's back home. The vet said he just doesn't think she's done snuggling, in this lifetime, yet. I know that time will come, sooner rather than later, but my heavy heart, from this morning, feels so much lighter, now.
And, she LOVES her vet. She tried to follow him out of the exam room! She does NOT love the process of getting there, and returning home, though. She snubbed me for a full 3 seconds, when she fled her crate.
This is her, impatiently waiting for the vet to return. Funny thing, before she fell ill, she was a typical tortie - you could pet her for just so long, and then the attitude would kick in. Now, she can't get enough love. I think she's stocking up on scritches.

(5,170 posts)I have a 17 yr old rescue tortoise with kidney decompensation and she has that attitude you described.
My other 2 boys, both black and white rescues are with other issues, but not like that, ok I have had enough stuff.
Glad your trip to the vet was a great ending!

(7,447 posts)my poor kitty had heart disease and heart lymphoma. the steroids could slow down the latter but trigger the former.
No other can had ever left the hospital after such a duo diagnosis. Pretty rare to even have them both actually, we are talking about a couple of dozen in the literature.
She came home for a good solid week of being her old self, but then the steroids triggered her, and it was time.
I don't think I have ever cried so hard about anything in my life.
I feel where you are at now.
My only advice is love on your kitty as much as you can...and when she passed I went crying and red eyed to the shelter and got a kitten.
It really helped with the grief and pain. It distracted me by giving me a new little one to care for and love.
I still miss Stormy, and see her ashes in a box every day, but my new cat brings me a lot of love and affection and a little annoyance lol just like Stormy did.

(26,260 posts)She's a good year younger than Boudicca. They were both rescued from a drug addicts house about 12 years ago, so they've had a pretty good and stable life, with me.
When Sophie goes, I might start long distance traveling, again. We'll see.

I have 3 seniors, and I'm thinking of getting some travel in, and then seeing who comes to my house when I'm home again.
Blessings for you and yours

(22,513 posts)After my father's spaniel passed in about 1949, he never had another dog. (He switched to cats. They inherited my cat when I moved overseas, and confessed to crying like a baby when she passed...serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam didn't toughen his loving heart.) But we're not here to protect ourselves from loving turning to the pain of loss. We're built to share love; giving makes us happy. Those who swear off or postpone getting another pet for ages remain stuck in unhappiness, which is a shame for the person and an animal who needs a home. So glad for you that you made the decision you did.

I don't think there is another living creature on this planet human or otherwise who I knew as well or who knew me as well.

(9,426 posts)our lives. I have had many cats and dogs, loved them all equally. I remember after having to put my dog, Jody, to sleep I told a friend and started crying again. My younger son was about 9 years old at that time. Very soberly he told my friend "I think Mom would have had an easier time putting one of us to sleep" Oh, there WERE times, believe me! (just joking)

(7,605 posts)I hope that you get to spend many more days with your treasured Boudicca.
Our cat Bermuda is having health problems. After all the regular doses of antibiotics and steroids, he's now on half tab of steroid every other day. He is improving with gaining back some weight and is not vomiting everyday.
Please give Boudicca kitty kisses from me.

(9,497 posts)I get to pet sit a Brittany named Ben and a stripey kitty named Kitsie. Kitsie is in late stage renal failure and at 17, isn't expected to live much longer. I just finished 2 weeks with those two and when I said good bye to that furry little face, I told her if we meet again I will be happy whether it is in this house or in the ethers.
They climb into your heart, don't they. Give her a rub on the ears from me.
