I went on a bike ride near Pittsburgh yesterday was

supprised the 17 year cicadas are out in full force there. They were especially loud around Burgettstown PA. I live just 40 miles away but we had them in 2016. We have brood V here, southwestern PA has brood VIII. I actually like their song or whatever it's called.

What is this "brood" you speak of, and how does that relate to the noise they make?

of cicadas each one comes out in different years. Every 17 years they come out have sex lay eggs and die. The eggs hatch and the larva stay underground for 17 years and the cycle starts over. Here in eastern Ohio we have brood V they came out in 2016. Just a few miles away in southwest PA they have brood VIII that are out now. They are only around 4 or 5 weeks but the noise can be deafining.

I always think of crayons and new shoes when I hear them. It is closer around here to the opening of school. But then, nothing seems to be happening like it used to.

I also like their song. It is comforting, although loud.
