Yesterday, the spouse and I were driving from Ca back to AZ.
He wanted to find a gas station on the route and handed me his phone. I tried my best, but I couldn't get Google on his phone to show me gas stations.
He got really mad and said, "This is where you being a luddite is a major pain in the ass for me!"
So I said, "Fine, I'll get a smartphone then."
He said, "Won't do much good, as you'll still never use it."
I don't know what to do.
It seems stupid for this to be a thing to fight over, but he gets seriously pissed off at me over situations like this.
Do you think I should throw in the towel and get a smartphone?
But, I think he's right. I still wouldn't know how to use his in moments of pressure.

(27,115 posts)I do feel like he's being a bit unreasonable.
But, most of the world thinks I'm unreasonable in not getting a smart phone and being more technologically adept.
So, I wanted to show willing, if it would help, you know?

(17,304 posts)Doesn't sound like it's of real interest to you. I think your husband should accept and respect your choice if you have no desire to use one.
I mean, how difficult would it be to pull over and for him to use his own phone to find what he needs and then carry on? It's what he'd have to do if he were driving by himself.
My wife and I both carry smartphones, but I'm an android user and she prefers her iPhone. Neither of us can operate each other's phones very well. LOL!

(17,434 posts)We do find plenty of other things.
Google was having significant issues yesterday, I don't know if that would have contributed to your difficulty,

(15,682 posts)and say, "find nearby gas stations", or "navigate to the nearest gas station".
Of course, you should turn on your GPS first so Google will know where you are.

(27,115 posts)The GPS was on, that much I know, because it could see that we were in El Cajon. It just kept wandering away from the freeway for some reason.
(But take everything I say with a grain of salt, since I am basically tech illiterate).

(102,237 posts)That said, if you DO elect to get a smart phone, highly suggest the GASBUDDY app (free). Incredibly useful to me to find both the CLOSEST gas and more commonly, THE CHEAPEST.
It is updated continually and makes a difference in trip planning for me (e.g., Costco is often the cheapest but not the closest by far, so I will time my need for gas for when I likewise can afford the time to grocery shop there too)
That said, arguing over different tech skills/interest is silly. It only discourages the person against picking up any new skills. But, I guess it beats arguing over Trump and RW politics.

(27,115 posts)I am further left than he is, but he abhors Trump and RW ass-hattery in general.

But I do feel he's being unfair in this case.

(20,491 posts)if he has a later-model phone, you don't need to input any info for a request like that.
If it is an iPhone, pick it up and just say "Hey Siri".
Wait a second.
Say "Gas stations near me".
The phone (Siri) will respond with a list of gas stations and the distance to each. select one and it will give driving directions.
Or restaurants. Or fabric stores. Or CVS.
I can't remember what the phrase is for Android phones.

(38,311 posts)She was driving and wanted me to find a gas station on her phone.
I didn't even know where to start.
Hell, she frequently gets her phone to do stuff by TALKING to it!
And the phone talks back.
It creeps me out.
I'm a Luddite in many ways.

(16,334 posts)First he clung to his pager. Then his Motorola. Then his flip phone. Begrudgingly got a smartphone when the others stopped updating their software. Refused to get apps. Refused to read books on a kindle. ETC!
Then when he realized GPS could save him some time and help him out as he traveled, he opened up to the idea. Now he reads the paper online (so I could STOP our paper subscription). He can take pictures using his phone at job sites instead of searching for batteries for his old digital camera. He can get email ON HS PHONE. It's a miracle, praise Jesus. He used to call me from the road and have me check his email for him. If someone had canceled a meeting that way, he was tough outta luck.
The others have told you how to use Siri but you can also get Waze and get real time traffic/directions to anything as well.
You don't have to do or know everything but there are some things that can be very helpful.

Dem2theMax
(9,651 posts)I started out with a flip phone, then a cousin gave me a phone that actually had a keyboard. And someone else gave me a smartphone. It took me four months to go into the Verizon store to activate it.
Cell phones are convenient for emergencies, but in all other respects, I hate them. Right now I need a cell phone for something that I do, and others need to be able to reach me. But in a few years I won't be doing it anymore, and this phone is going bye-bye.
So please don't think you are alone. There are a lot of us out here who do just fine without all of the little technology advances that are being shoved down our throats.

(3,518 posts)I use my smart phone as little as possible and I don't have the time or inclination to learn how to use someone else's phone.
When my wife wanted a new, cutting edge model we agreed that she would get training and support from someone else and that worked out well for both of us.
One of the most annoying things about technology is when someone assumes that you should know everything about every platform, operating system and app and then they deride you when you don't.
