I need an ethics check please....

My husband's grandfather is in town to visit for the next 3 weeks.....
He's from the Midwest ,former military, 71 years old.... My husband warned me before he got here that he was and all day Fox news watcher and at loud volumes....

Within the first hour or so of meeting him....he says several things like
"I don't care who you are, black white pink or purple..."
"Did you see that homosexual running for president? he kissed his husband right on TV I don't think the voters are going to go for that..... it doesn't bother me though"

So when he asked me "have you heard of Fox TV do you guys get that channel?" I said no we don't get that channel....

Am I horrible???? I feel horrible but I also can't stand the idea of listening to Fox news at loud volumes in my own home for the next 3 weeks 😱

Should I just go with it because he's a guest in my home?

I don't wanna!!!! Lol

What would you do?

1. I think you showed restraint.

Sometimes a white lie is better than an out-of-control, soul-destroying political argument. (Especially with a relative).

3. Make certain that you lock Fox out on your remote control.

There is absolutely no way I would put up with Fox News for three weeks, particularly with the evening shows.

4. I did...parental lock lol but

Oh my God for the 30 seconds it took me to figure out how to do that I had to listen to it! It was Laura ingraham show... And some dude was talking about the massive amount of undocumented Africans pouring into Texas.... This dude was talking about how they are all diseased and uneducated and so poor and he actually said 'I don't even know how they got onto an airplane'

I almost lost my shit within 30 seconds of seeing that shit.....

9. He can easily discover that you get Fox

by turning on the TV and flipping thru the channels. I would have simply said that you don't watch Fox, you watch other news outlets. You might present him with the idea that being in your home is an opportunity for him to see and hear other points of view. Don't make him wrong, even if he is. He is presenting you with an opportunity to practice patience. Lots of patience.

24. See the above messages about using parental lock to lock out Fox News

I used to do that with my TVs when I got satellite TV. I haven't figured it out now that I am streaming but since it is mostly just me and my husband I don't worry about it. He watches MSNBC, Bloomberg, and BBC. I watch MSNBC and lots of streamed mysteries and sci fi.

If there's a TV in his room, he could watch it there privately, maybe?

16. You pay for the cable/sat TV...

...you get to choose what's plays in your house.

If a guest wanted to bring home an underage child and have sex...IMO, that's just as offensive as FAUX SNOOZE.

It's blocked at my house...there is NO way that vile POS is gonna be in my home!

19. You did fine.

I would not open my house for long-term stay overs to people who don't share my political views. I watch MSNBC almost all day and I don't need fading friendships to collect information that they can then use to trash me to everyone else.

20. No worries

Just plan activities as far away from the tv as possible. Keep him busy & too tired for anything but sleep at the end of the day. After all, family visits are for spending time with each other Good luck, have a peaceful visit.

21. I don't understand why this wasn't thought out before he showed up?

Knowing what he's like, who invited him?

For the sake of family peace, as he's already in your home, I'd just bite it and be pleasant but use this as a learning experience and plan better for next time.

I won't allow Fox in my home either, like I don't allow smoking. Both things are unhealthful and offensive.

26. My mom was a Fox News fan. The channel was blocked, at my house

And when I went over to her house, I would either turn off the TV, or change the channel, when she wasn't looking. If she insisted on having it on, I'd make it very clear it would be a very brief visit.

you took an opportunity to spare yourself of the obnoxious. MAYBE he'll hear some REAL news while he's there?

Good luck.

29. We don't get any "channels" on our television, just Netflix and DVDs, that's all it does.

That should be plenty enough to entertain anyone for three weeks.

30. It's your home, your rules.

If he doesn't like it he can leave. You are entitled to conduct matters in your own home as you see fit. You are NOT a horrible person at all. He can head off to the local redneck bar if he wants to watch Fox news. You do not have to compromise your beliefs to accommodate a racist, anti-gay, bigoted, republican jerk.

You are in control. Do not let him intimidate you. Stand your ground and let him know that he is a GUEST in your home. You call the shots. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you!
