good morning, i can’t stop thinking about how some baby cheetahs in captivity get paired with dogs so they won’t be anxious and can pick up social cues

Zoos often pair the big cats with dogs, but lining up the best match can take time

Best friends

The Labrador retriever was brave, friendly, and excitable—seemingly just the right match for Emmett, a new cheetah cub at the Columbus Zoo.

The cat had another idea. When Emmett arrived at a breeder’s home, the cheetah gravitated to a different puppy, named Cullen. They frolicked, then cuddled up for a rest.

“Emmett loved Cullen from the start,” said Ms. Rapp, vice president of animal programs. “Cullen is really Emmett’s dog.”

Zoos regularly match cheetahs with puppies, proving that cats and dogs really can get along. Cheetahs are more timid and reclusive than other big cats, and zoos say they often thrive when paired with a compatible canine. Finding the right match, however, can be tricky.
