Benioff and Weiss’s new Star Wars movies

Release date: December 16, 2022, December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026

Game of Thrones was the biggest TV show we've seen in a long, long time. Season 8 broke numerous records, and, while the fandom may have been divided, those no denying creators/showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did an excellent job bringing George RR Martin's world to life. The duo are now taking over the Star Wars universe, with their trilogy coming before Rian Johnson's (more on that later).

“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said at a presentation. “And we're not saying anything more about that.”

Exactly what the films will be about therefore remains a mystery as all Disney has said is that "these new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson".

So, a spin-off exploring a new part of the galaxy, then? A darker, more adult, gore-and-sex treatment? A movie set in the era of BioWare's popular Knights of the Old Republic games, centuries before the events of the Star Wars movies? Kathleen Kennedy told MTV at Star Wars Celebration that, “We talk about [Old Republic] all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”

RIAN JOHNSON TEASES THAT HIS STAR WARS TRILOGY WILL MOVE 'BEYOND LEGACY CHARACTERS'

With the Skywalker Saga about to close out for good in December, it's time to start thinking about the future of Star Wars. Where will the iconic franchise go once the galaxy far, far away's most famous family is done with their tale of good versus evil? Well, you don't need to worry your pretty little head about it, because Rian Johnson is on the case! Speaking with The Observer, The Last Jedi writer/director teased his in-development trilogy for Lucasfilm, talking about how he's excited about the prospect of moving into uncharted territory.

“I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting, and then figure out what it’s going to be,” he said. “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue-sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it, and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘What’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

Is he perhaps referring to Temiri Blagg, the little Force-sensitive boy (played by Temirlan Blaev) who showed up at the very end of TLJ? Could this unknown quantity end up serving as the basis for a brand-new series of films in this ever-expanding universe? Nothing is certain, but if Johnson proved anything with Episode VIII, it's that he wants to majorly subvert our expectations of the 42-year-old franchise.

Star Wars (A New Hope) came out in 1977. I stood in line opening weekend in SoCal (I was 13). I am 55 now (almost 56).

I do not plan to see this movie in the theater.

I saw the original Star Wars film in 1977. It was awesome! I remember like it was yesterday. I saw it with my best girlfriends, who are still my best friends to this day!

My son loves Star Wars too. We really enjoy watching the Star Wars movies together.
