I think I miss drive-ins.

I say "think" because I'm sure I'm looking back at them through rose-colored windshields. Heat, humidity, mosquitos, etc...

Still, if there was a drive in around I would go borrow my grandpa's 1965 LeMans and take my wife on a drive-in date.

I was thinking about that, too.. That the whole drive-in thing was an homage to happier days... but does it really fit in with our lives today?

Just curious to hear what other people think about that...

watching a movie. Sort of like tailgate parties are at some major sporting events.

For little kids, how fun! To see a movie, outside!
For teens, how fun! To see each other, outside!
For parents, how fun! To see your kids running amok, outside!
For adults, how fun! To see everyone having fun, outside!

and all that wonderful drive in food...

Plus, for me, getting to drive my grandpa's VGC* '65 LeMans (He bought it new in 65)

Maybe sneakin' in a couple beers too.

I just found out there's a pretty modern drive-in about an hour out of town. We're already making plans...

One of our first dates was to a drive-in so there's the fun of re-living that too...

*Very Good Condition - everyone likes to throw around the word "mint" when talking about old things but I know this car isn't mint - it was their regular driving car into the 70s. But if you know Aircraft mechanics, you know they keep their shit straight and tight. He's maintained it for years (garaged for the last 15 or so) and recently had the engine rebuilt from the ground up. Always had it repainted the same factory pale yellow and still has the original wire wheel covers.

The only part he's missing to make it close to original condition is something for the factory air conditioner - and he has it on order but it hasn't come in yet. lol, maybe I'll wait for the A/C. Spoiled brat I am.

PS - Welcome to DU, Concrete!

We make a night of it...double feature, reclining lawn chairs, cooler full of dinner, people who are tired snooze, everyone else watches the films, pets come too!

They use FM now (and have for quite a while - no more squawk boxes). Use the car stereo for the adult movie (not porn, just audience) and a boom box for the kids' movie. Most theaters with two screens slate movies in that manner. We've got one of the few remaining drive-ins about 20 miles from here.

30 years ago there was one in Beltsville, MD but all it showed were porn flicks. Ours is in Dillsburg, PA but Ahold bought it out and rented it back to the owner with the condition that they can evict them at any time to build a mega-store Giant. That doesn't bode well.
