If so, what was your experience? I am thinking of trying it, but it's not cheap, so I would like to hear from some people first before spending the $$. The cheapest I could find was around $50.00, and I am not even sure how long that will last.
Also, if you have a brand recommendation, that would be helpful as well.

(86,608 posts)but have yet to use the oil, the oil I use goes into topicals. But I do know that tea will help. The tea is just dried plant. My friends who have asked for the oil say it helps them to sleep so I guess it does, they come back for more.

(17,622 posts)It starts out with >0.5% THC. Had to grow it that way under state regulation. It's hemp but a strong strain with ~ 8% CBDa which gets reduced or eliminated with decarb. It's the heat that kills it, where other cannabinoids transform or activate with heat. It's a strange set of variables. CBDa is the element which is said to have the greatest anti-inflammatory properties. I've found that the tea (plain old leaf with or without buds) does wonders for me so I'm not sure about the decarb heat level as the tea only stays hot for a short time. The best topicals I've made so far are the long, cold infusion process type. Nothing is lost in medicinal properties and they last a long time with proper storage. My next experiment will be to decarb the raw material before using it in a cold infusion.
I know some folks who use the oil as a topical and some put a few drops in their coffee. I add a few buds to my smoothies that I make in a juicer. The tea knocks out a lot of pain, swelling and aching, of which I have a lot, noticeable in about fifteen to twenty minutes after I have had a couple good swallows, I sip most of it though. I suppose you could try adding just a few drops to a beverage and see if that helps.
When buying CBD products, I never have but, I would recommend looking to see what the % of CBDs and what types they are claiming and try to avoid products with a lot of ingredients. There are several desirable cannabinoids, I don't know a lot about most so I need to see more research when that becomes available. My friend and I grew a few acres of it, high grade stuff, but finding research is hard because it was forbidden for so long. We are all learning with this new/old item.

(26,262 posts)I was a total skeptic, but was also suffering frequent anxiety attacks - sometimes in the middle of the night - and didn't want to risk getting caught up in the prescribed medications merry-go-round. Within a very short period of time, the anxiety pretty much ended. I haven't had problems, since June, when I started the CBD.
As for the insomnia, I've had a little relief, but agree that what will really help is the inclusion of some THC. I'm just waiting for some shops to open, in my vicinity. The thing I noticed the CBD really helped was, it stopped that middle of the night brain spin, where I relived and worried about every problem in the world. Now, if/when I wake up, I can usually fall back to sleep.
I get my from a very reputable on-line source that gives me a substantial veteran discount. Most of the local places I've checked have various discounts and are great about answering questions and giving advice. One even held a class where they handed out free samples.

(6,110 posts)and still have a few pills left! So i guess it was not addictive to me.
Why I like Xanax is it is one of the very few meds which does not upset my stomach.
The Xanax was given to me when I suffered a cardiac event at 8000' altitude after drinking coffee+wine and then going out for a jog in Santa Fe, NM. Xanax restored my heart rhythm very quickly and took away the anxiety scare of heart beating erroneously, which never had experienced before.

(63,221 posts)Are you able to reveal your online source or is that private? I also suffer from anxiety and I think it is a major reason why I have such a hard time sleeping. My head just spins like a merry-go-round all night long. I feel like I can't control it.
Thanks again Siwsan!

(14,624 posts)CBD does nothing for me. THC, on the other hand, is the only thing that really helps me sleep.
Ive been treated for insomnia for the last twenty years or so and have been prescribed probably a dozen different prescriptions. I currently take temazepam and a muscle relaxer at bed time and still only sleep about 3 hours. THC helps me sleep much better.
I hope you find something that helps.

(63,221 posts)It's good to hear everyone's varied experiences. I am just getting desperate w/ the insomnia. It's starting to get really debilitating. Even if I do get a few hours of sleep, it is very shallow, anxious sleep w/ bizarre dreams so it doesn't really feel like I have slept at all.
If this doesn't work, I am thinking that I might start exercising for hours before bed so that I am so physically exhausted that I can't stay awake. I'm pretty lazy so that is not my first go-to-option, however, I am that desperate.
Thanks!

(26,262 posts)Sometimes when my brain spin paired up with stress related body aches, I'd get up and just stand under the shower. It helped to, at least, relax me.
The funny thing was, when I'd turn on the television and tune in to 'Law and Order', often it would lull me to sleep! I guess I took comfort in Jack McCoy's voice!

(34,136 posts)But I have to be to NOT read a good book since I won't put it down until hours later. A therapist once told me to get off the computer and read for an hour before bed - the book I picked up to try her advice was great and I read the whole thing that night and slept all the next day! Then I remembered why I stopped reading in bed...
Exercising helps, but not in the evenings. If I get a lot of walking during the day I will sleep better - if I don't aggravate my bad back. If I exercise after dinner, I tend to stay up later and get less sleep.
The other thing that helps is having the TV on all night with the sound turned low. If I wake up and my brain starts working on a problem I can watch whatever is on to distract me. That does not work if I sleep in the bedroom, though since my husband can't sleep with the TV on. I did it a lot when recovering from surgeries but slept in my recliner in the other room. Oddly enough, Forensics Files was a favorite for this -- the narrator has a great voice. Father Brown and Midsommer Murders were also good since they tend to have quieter soundtracks.

(51,308 posts)Thats been a godsend for me.
Before that, I used the TV the same way you do...usually old shows, Frasier, Will and Grace, that kind of thing...nothing tense.

(34,136 posts)The last trip we were doing a lot of hiking so I was worn out most nights and slept OK. Pain kept me awake more than anything - bursitis in both hips and back pain made every sleeping position uncomfortable.
The only thing - I hate wearing ear buds or headphones, so that might be an obstacle.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I will just keep telling myself "one more chapter". I also like to have the TV on w/ the sound turned on low. I never really watch it, but I like the background noise because I find it soothing. I love the shows you mention, but I only get basic cable so I usually keep it on "ME TV" which plays old sit coms - Gilligan's Isle, Brady Bunch, Hogan's Heroes, Alfred Hitchcock, etc.
Thank you!

(34,136 posts)The major problem - after a few hours, Netflix would stop and put up a message asking if I was still watching. Sometimes the silence would wake me up!
My husband does like listening to music for sleeping. We have some 10 hour YouTube sleep music recorded for the times we were places with no internet, but mostly we stream them. I like the YouTube channel Yellow Brick Cinema because they have some very nice, probably computer generated music with pretty pictures, most are live so no time limit, but you can find ten, eight, and three hour videos, too.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)The absence of sound will wake me up. I often play music or meditation tracks very slowly on You Tube, but they will cut off after a certain period of time and I find that I will wake up because of the total silence. I thought that was strange, but it's nice to know I am not the only one!

(12,814 posts)... so any trace of THC (which sometimes happens) screws up her ability to get her regular prescriptions on which she has relied for years, because they are still bound by federal law and license.
I don't think it helped much with pain in her case anyway -- maybe she hadn't found a good dose -- but so she doesn't use it anymore due to the risk with her doctor, plus the cost.

(18,837 posts)I live in what is most likely the last state in the United States that will go for legalization. I've seen proposed legislation. In Colorado, you basically get rubber-stamped for a red card with the most minimal of ailments. That's somewhat of a moot point since the main benefit of medical versus recreational seems to be the price. But here, the proposals for medical are for things like cancer. If you have anxiety or a tummy ache, this state's response is "sucks to be you."
But I agree. When I lived in Colorado, THC solved a number of problems, anxiety and insomnia being at the top of the list. C'est la vie.

They KNOW what the symbols '3:00 AM' mean and they start whining. Is OK, cuz I've been awake for an hour. So.. taking a hit at 2 am or even 3 am isn't an option unless I want to make coffee groggy.
I do keep a strong Sativa on hand tho so I can wake and bake on the porch watching the stars...deer...wild turkey..etc

(2,945 posts)insufficient she'll try a 1:1 oil (half CBD half THC). One thing I always tell people who can't sleep is hydrate -- with water! Being even just a little bit dehydrated affects the whole body. So make sure that whatever you try includes consistently drinking lots of water and laying off the soda and booze by early evening. Also, cuz it's wintertime, make sure you are warm enough while sleeping cuz even the slightest chill will interfere with sleep. So my advice, first try water, socks, and more blankets, then spend the $$ on CBD oil.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I am one of those people who is chronically thirsty so never dehydrated. I have given up soda completely, but will sometimes drink seltzer w/ a little fruit juice.
However, I like to sleep in a cold room w/ blankets. I cannot sleep in a warm room. I grew up in upstate NY and my parents didn't heat the upstairs at night because they also liked it cold, so we just had a lot of blankets and down comforters, but I felt like I slept so well in those conditions.
In college, when I was in a sorority, we slept in "cold dorms", even in the middle of winter, which was where we all slept on the top floor (we had rooms w/ our belongings and furnishings, just not beds) and always had to keep the windows open, even in freezing cold weather. I would sleep like a rock up there. Maybe it was the weight of all the covers and the fresh, cool air.
Thank you for your advice, I will definitely cut out the iced tea earlier in the day and stick w/ water, sleep w/ socks and heavy blankets (in a cold room) and give the CBD oil a shot.

(32,676 posts)Two puffs and only two of a good Indica puts me to sleep. Any more than that makes my thoughts spin around.
You might try a low dose THC candy. Im not a fan of eating it as its hard to get the doze right. But it does help sleep. You just dont need much. My doctor told me you really need a small amount of THC to help the CBD work. Does not have to be enough to notice a high. CBD has been great for pain in my case.

(4,386 posts)Oil with THC is good too. I rarely smoke, but the oil helps my pain and sleep issues as well as depression. I take it mostly at night. I don't enjoy smoking some strains and you might look at the reviews as to which work better for some issues.
With THC oil at night, I don't feel high when I get up. Just make sure it is a strong enough dose to get the best benefits, especially if you have an injury or illness. I upped my dosage 100% and feel 100% better than with my previous dosage, which still gave me a lot of benefits. It can be life changing.

(98 posts)CBD cant be sold on Amazon, according to the sites seller policies. Some CBD oil companies will relabel their CBD oils as hemp oils in order to get away with selling them on Amazon or some products might be labeled as CBD oils but contain no CBD at all when you read the fine print. So basically you can't be sure what you will get on Amazon..

(4,268 posts)Then CBD oil might help. The very few studies I found couple years ago while researching CBD oil used very high dosages. I can get 750ml (30ml) CBD for $50ish. (721 posts)I haven't tried CBD for insomnia, but half a capsule of magnesium citrate in the evening really relaxes me and I sleep very deeply and well.
I've also used valerian tincture which is also very good for insomnia. But the magnesium has all kinds of benefits for relaxing the body, lowering blood pressure, etc. and many of us are low on it as it's depleted from the soil because of poor farming practices (agribusiness). Please read up on it before trying. The citrate is one of the two forms of magnesium which is best, I forget what the other one is called.
