(34,108 posts)It looks like the ice is all South. Up here in the NE part of the state it is snowing and has been since sometime in the early morning hours. The worst area of snow right now has I70 blocked off West of here with alternate traffic routes because the visibility is almost 0 and the snow is heavy. When I went out to the barn this morning I had about 4-5 inches and it has not stopped. I bet we end up with 6 or 7 in this part of the state. South is really dealing with a lot of crap this morning. I know there are several DUers down that way, I hope they are OK.

(25,853 posts)I used to live in Overland Park, and a quick check of weather in that area looks like it's bad there also.
Still have family and friends back there, although I'm in Santa Fe these days.

(34,108 posts)by turning on the Chiefs game. Now, I don't really care about that but my husband has it on. The snow fall they are getting there has been like this the entire time. We got it first and it is still going so they will not be done with it for a long while.

(34,108 posts)or did you get ice up there too? We were almost on that road last week looking for a rescue dog but found one in KC instead. I love driving that Highway in good weather once you get to Holton it is a nice drive on up.
Anyway, I am glad you made it. Whew, it sounds awful.

(1,132 posts)The highway was snowpacked and markings difficult if not impossible to see. That coupled with heavy Truck traffic was the problem. I'm sure(well, hopeful anyway) that they've been working on it since I was on it. Did Santa for couple of hours at small town northwest of Holton. 6 miles county road...only met one vehicle each way, it was still loose snow.
MuseRider
(34,108 posts)Cool that you were doing Santa. I have a friend in Berryton who does that as well.
Be careful. Hopefully we will not get the next 2 inches over night and tomorrow. My son is supposed to drive in from KC to work in Topeka tomorrow. I sure hope he stays home.

(14,118 posts)but when it comes to trying to drive or even walk on ice I heed the good old weather warning to
"shelter in place". Following that advice has saved me a lot of grief.

(15,381 posts)There were a few fender benders, stuck cars, and a lot of idiotic drivers.
When I moved back to Kansas from Oklahoma, I was actually looking forward to being around people who know how to drive on snow. I guess I should quantify that with needing to be from a small town where you drove on ice sheets in the country.

I rescheduled my afternoon tutoring appointments and stayed home.

(12,904 posts)Last 45 miles were slicker than snot. Multiple spin outs.
That was at noon, and conditions have steadily worsened throughout the day.
Stay safe, people!

(494 posts)It's an elevated freeway that runs through Wichita from east to west, its always as slick as hell when the snow flies.
Here in Emporia the roads are nasty, snow covered and real slick,we had snow then a dash of freezing rain and then more snow.
I went to the store this morning and all I can say is thank dog for Good tires, abs brakes and a very heavy van.
