We were half a block from the swimming pool so my brother and I would walk down there by ourselves at age 6/8. Our dog, Tippy, would walk with us, watch us check in at the entrance, walk around the building at the entrance so he could see through the chainlink fence. He'd watch us get in the 2-foot, stay for a few minutes to make sure we were okay then go home.

And was waiting when school let out in the afternoon. We lived only four blocks from the school, so I walked every morning and Foxy, named because he was red and looked a little like a fox, came with me to where I had to cross the busy road between my neighborhood and the school where the school crossing guard helped the kids get to school safely.

One afternoon, he wasn't waiting for me. I went home, looking for him the entire way. When I got home, Mom was very upset. Foxy had come home with his face all swollen and she rushed him to the vet. He didn't survive the trip. He'd been bitten by a water moccasin, the vet told her. Even if Foxy had made it that far, he probably couldn't be saved. Dad came home from work early to bury Foxy.

This is the only picture I have of Foxy. I'm not sure what I am holding - it looks like a bone!

That picture has to be before fall of 1960. They paved the roads that summer. When Hurricane Donna came through they realized they had not done the storm drainage right and that intersection was flooded for days.

And the girls got on.

Or if the bus driver was different.

Dogs are very intuitive, and I’m betting that if this scenario didn’t go just as he was used to, he wouldn’t put up with it.

he wouldn't hesitate to protect them.

Animals are so protective. My folks gave me a tiny little seal-point Siamese kitten around Easter when I was 6 years old. I named her Yum Yum and she was my best friend. We were inseparable. Except when I entered middle school and took up the oboe. She hated that oboe so much I'd have to practice in the car because she'd attack the instrument. (There's probably an oboe at Charlevoix Junior-Senior High School with little teeth marks in its bell to this day )

Everybody else called her "The Dragon Lady" because she couldn't stand anybody but me and managed to scratch every family member and most friends & neighbors. She'd actually attack my dad if he yelled at me, lol. I still miss her.

our dog used to follow us to school, and then wait for us on the school lawn all day, and then he'd walk home w/ us.

Of course, these days, there are leash laws.
