A mountain lion was spotted Wednesday on High School Butte, occasionally leaving the cover of a juniper tree to descend onto a carcass further downhill. The animal's presence prompted the Teton County School District to send out a warning to parents to remind their children who ride their bikes or walk to school to be aware of their surroundings.

Wildlife photographers and tourists swarm the area

The School District is in the middle of the forest, strange place for a school.

No big.

"Be aware of your surroundings" is a lifestyle.

I’m sorry I misspelled your name above. My iPad thinks it knows best and it never does. Anyway... that looks like a decent sized bear. 😳

I live where we have both kinds of bears, moose, everything troops through... Keep bear spray handy, it's the safest thing to use and it works on all mammals.

kinds of bears in your ‘hood. That’s a whole different deal! 🐻

When my kiddo was a baby, I never took him out in his stroller without bear spray...ever. We used to go down to the creek when he was tiny so he could splash around when it got hot...once I had to grab the boy and wade across the creek because a bear was sniffing and licking his stroller. I was scared at the time even though I was across the creek with bear spray in my hand. Kinda funny looking back.

on your part and you did have the spray but it's still a tense moment! As I used to tell fools thinking a shallow river was all the protection they needed when watching a bear too closely,

"You know that bear can f'ing walk on water if it decides it doesn't like you, right?"

If I wasn't in uniform and they were being real stupid in the park, I'd go back to my vehicle and get out my camera and act like I was waiting to catch some incredible video within minutes.

They can get into trouble when they are trying to forge their own way after their moms kick them loose. We have lots of lions and bears in our neighborhood. Folks are always catching them on their trail cams and posting them on the social media. It’s good to keep an eye on tiny kids walking to bus stops in the morning. Lions are sneaky for sure.

get it??

Um but seriously, if you warn your kids to "be aware of their surroundings", I'm not clear on how such an awareness fends off an attack by a predatory BIG CAT?!

Sounds as if all is well, though, (except for that poor carcass further downhill, of course...) and I am mighty glad for that!!
