Hooray! Hubby is getting a hearing test on Wednesday!

I've been telling him to get one for YEARS and he says he hears fine. But every day I get the same "hmm, what?" from him when is say anything. He's 79 and has been assuring me his hearing is fine.

So for whatever reason, he's scheduled a hearing test. It's with an outfit called "Miracle Ear" and all I can think of is Ross Perot's great line "The American people need to turn up their miracle ear." It used to make me laugh. No more.

and mitigates the frustration inherent in that sort of communication.

I recall Perot, during a debate, saying, "I'm all ears"... then looking a bit pained when there was laughter from the audience.

I really could use a hearing aid right now, but I won’t be on Medicare for a couple of years yet and my current insurance does not cover hearing aids. Its terrible to ask everybody to repeat themselves all the time. If I watch TV I have to use closed captioning.

Good luck!

3. Thanks to Elizabeth Warren, he won't have to pay four thousand bucks for a hearing aid

which is what they charged my mother 20 years ago. Audiologists had a monopoly on hearing aid sales and Warren sponsored a bill to end it, garnering enough Republican support to get it passed. Yay, Warren!

Prices now are knocked down as much as 90% over what they were during the monopoly and people can choose the variety that suits them, something invisible and hard to control for the vain and something obvious and easy to control for the clumsy. Not sure which camp I'll be in, but the hearing is the only thing not going, old age not being for sissies.

Just expect him to turn it down when he doesn't want to hear, "to save batteries."

My FIL (86) and MIL (83) both wear hearing aids. Dad has trouble hearing the high pitches, Mom has trouble hearing the lower pitches. We joked that it must be from years and years of listening to each other fuss, complain, tell stories, be loud, and laugh. The dr. said it really wasn't a joke because it seems to fit a pattern that he sees in his practice.

Hope he gets the support he needs and finds one that fits him well.

5. I wished I could use hearing aids

I have hearing loss, tested for it. But, I also have psoriasis in my ear canal and the doc said wearing a hearing aid will make it worse. It's pretty miserable already so can't imagine it getting worse. Also have severe tinnitis, and hearing aids don't help with that but it compromises my hearing even more. My poor husband repeats himself all the time, but bless his heart, he doesn't show aggravation with me, he apologizes and speaks up louder. He tends to be a soft speaker to begin with and it's not comfortable for him to raise his voice at all.

I hope your hubby can benefit from some kind of hearing aid.

12. My wife got a test at Costco the other day

For years we've all had to repeat everything we all say to each other - constantly saying "WHAT?" so much I think now it's just habit.

I know my problem is tinnitus and that's because I've been going to loud death/thrash metal shows in small clubs with no noise ordnance rules for almost 40 years. If there is any other background noise I can't hear what people are saying to me but I'm used to it.

But we were at Costco and they had a hearing thing there and were doing free tests so she went in while I thought "Yeah, the guy that wants to sell us hearing aids is in charge of whether or not we need them" but she went in and strangely enough they said "Nope. You don't need them. Come see us in 10 years" (She's in her mid 60s)...

I was flabbergasted but impressed.

So now when she says "What?" and I say "You need hearing aids!" she says "NO I DON'T - I WAS TESTED!"

and we laugh but I still have to repeat myself.

I have bad tinnitus, and I lost about 30% of my hearing.

Was constantly saying "What?" to people.

I now have hearing aids, while changing the batteries is a pain, (about once a week,) and other maintenance on the hearing aids, I love being able to talk normally and hear people talk to me.
