http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum
"Laudanum, also known as Tincture of Opium, is an alcoholic herbal preparation containing approximately 10% powdered opium by weight (the equivalent of 1% morphine).[1] It is reddish-brown in colour and extremely bitter to the taste. Laudanum contains almost all of the opium alkaloids, including morphine and codeine. A potent narcotic by virtue of its high morphine concentration, laudanum was historically used to treat a variety of ailments, but its principal use was as an analgesic and cough suppressant. Until the early 20th century, laudanum was sold without a prescription and was a constituent of many patent medicines. Today, laudanum is strictly regulated and controlled throughout most of the world."

(4,026 posts)Doc Adams routinely dispensing. Between the drunks in the Long Branch and Doc dispensing laudanum, it's no wonder Matt stayed pretty busy.

MUCH better than the TV show. William Conrad ("Cannon"/"Jake & The Fatman" plays
an incredible Matt Dillon. Kitty is an absolute lush who has a terminal case of the hot
and moisties for Dillon.

Doc spends much of his time complaining about how nobody pays him for his services...
and is a real ambulance-chaser when it comes to doing his job as coroner.

I just finished listening to an episode called "Lute Bone" (after Dr. Lute Bone) about
a snake-oil salesman selling his "curative". Doc analyzes it and finds a good deal of
opium in it (like laudanum) and goes on a crusade to stop him and run him out of town
because of "that poison". He wasn't prescribing much laudanum in the radio show.
.
BTW -- I HIGHLY recommend this OTR streaming site. Completely free (they ask for a
total of $350/mo in donations). 12,369 episodes of 169 different radio show series.

(4,026 posts)I grew up on and have watched Gunsmoke on TV throughout my life. I've heard about the radio show but, until now, never had an opportunity to hear it. Many thanks!

"Gunsmoke" alone has just over 400 shows (it played for over 12 years -- maybe the
longest-running drama in radio). There are LOTS of other great shows on there.
.
I direct as many people as I can to their site. It's the least I can do.
