The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI miss my gym. Especially the weights.
It use to be that I could count on lower back pain in the a.m. just from working on a project that required a lot of standing around. Last fall that all went away when I began to use the weight at my gym. In particular, the leg presser.
Well, guess what? It didn't take long and now I'm back to the same trouble.
Anyone have a gym hack that I can put together in the interim? I have plenty of empty water jugs and toilet paper rolls I can use for the endeavor.

(12,429 posts)I do almost everything on the Powertec but the Roman chair is critical for two things: situps and hyperextensions. The latter has sharply reduced my chiropractor visits by strengthening my lower back with zero strain. So I would suggest you invest in a good Roman chair if you can as they are not expensive (under $200), have a small footprint and prevent straining while strengthening the lower back muscles. Oddly enough, on the Powertec, the leg press hurts my back but the squat does not. I recommend the kind, like mine, that has two upright posts: one that's adjustable with cylindrical pads to hold your calves down and the other with flat pads to hold you pelvis. This is the classic Roman chair design. if you search for "CAP Barbell Strength Roman Chair" on Amazon, you'll see one similar to mine.

on edit: the key to preventing strain with hyperextensions, at least as I have found, is to keep you lower body, foot to waist, parallel to the floor, not at an angle.

(100,080 posts)I started swimming a lot because my physical therapist recommended it for building circulation and leg muscles. But can't go to the gym right now which is one of the few in my area that has an indoor pool because of the outbreak. Can't go to any gym for that matter. Fuck this god damn virus.

Tried lots of other stuff - the tennis balls are the only thing that always works. Experiment to see what feels good.
