Comcast!

Yes, we still subscribe. Don't have Netflix nor Hulu nor the other extra "streaming" outlets. We don't watch much TV, except specific programs and then spouse likes to just surface: National Geographic, SciFy and others.

So it was time to renegotiate price. And as I were talking with a helpful agent, she said that it was time to replace the modem for the Internet. OK, it was shipped. I read the instructions and at some point it praised the benefits: Smart Home - don't have it. Comcast Voice mail - don't have it. Comcast security - nope. Smartphone - nope. So why do I need it?

Anyway, I decided to at least view the instructions which included also.. an App. I hate all these Apps. I don't have a "smartphone." Still, there are some on my iMac so I went to the Apple Apps store - not there. So I clicked on their link and it said: for iPhone. I don't use any smartphone!

Decided to chat with a Comcast Agent. Repeated the story that I don't think I need the new modem. Oh, let me check the functionality of the modem, he said. And I sat and sat and nothing happened and I finally just ended the "chat."

It was cheaper than "double play". Never got their modem and phone. Didn't want them. Now they finally took that feature off my bill and it's a little bit lower. I also got a big refund. Their pricing is crazy and way too high. But cable is better quality and more reliable than satellite or phone lines.

Now they're telling me that my modem is not "secure" and should get theirs. No way. They'd charge me a monthly fee for it.

But didn't you need a modem to connect to the Internet?

As I looked at it I saw "streampix" and asked the agent what it was. Oh, she was raving, it is when you are out, in the mall and want to watch something on TV. Again, with a "smartphone" that I don't have and, besides, if I am out, why do I want to watch something on a 2" (2"?) screen?

I think it is my second one. The first was way out of date and slow. This one has been just fine and works with my WiFi and Smart TV.

I don't want a Smart Phone. I have a Flip Phone that servers my purpose. However it looks like I'll have to get a Smart Phone to pay for things at a store.

I'd rather use a cell phone company for all my internet than deal with them.

Fortunately my wife and I have multiple internet options where we live.

My wife and I quit traditional television a long time ago. We don't have cable, satellite or broadcast television. We have an unlimited DSL connection and $8.99 Netflix. We also rent DVDs. Our library has a large selection of DVDs and also a streaming service. So far we haven't run out of things to watch on television.

My wife's parents live in a rural area with phone lines that are sixty years old at best. They had dial-up internet that was very slow until AT&T built a cell phone tower on a mountain they can see from their house. That's how they get their internet now. Their neighbors, who live behind hills and such, still suffer dial-up or expensive satellite internet.

In a better nation we'd be building a system of universal internet access, just as we built rural phone and electric systems, and just as we built roads and highways.
